  1. Defunct NY race tracks...

Someone sent me a rare clipping that looked like Whites Beach was called "Playa Blanca" for a while. Of course, that seems to mean "white beach', but he track was named for a specific beach area on Ballston Lake - not the color of the sand. The track still sits there, mostly enclosed in a fence, because someone raised fallow deer on the property after the property changed hands. I haven't been on the site, but Danny O has. Bill

  4. RUTLAND FAIRGROUNDS (Rutland VT): This one was talked about on this board quite a bit five, six years ago in 2005-2006. It sounded like stock car racing on the fairgrounds’ dirt track might actually happen. Rutland really wouldn’t be a “new trackâ€, as racing was held on the fairgrounds over 40 years ago. I believe they held city hall meetings, conducted decibel level tests and everything. Opposition from the city’s residents, and city hall, was too strong and I guess the plan was shelved. My mother lives in Rutland, and I followed the whole fairgrounds things carefully both through her and through the Devil's Bowl crowd. It never stood much of a chance. Besides thep people living onthe street above the grounds, the track had a horrific history of injuries and disasters there.

I operate the Catamount website, which I am sure many of you have visited. I am trying - just like you - to preserve as much history of early stock car racing as I can. I have the problem, however of covering a large area which includes the eastern part of New York. I simply can't get into stuff way over by Watertown or locations out near Buffalo [just like I can't handle much in southern New England]. ANy photos on my site are there for the public. Occasionally, I have seen photos taken by my old Kodak Brownie box camera for sale in various locations. That doesn't delight me, but I can live with it. My recent work involves the following tracks in your area: Airborne, Ashland Park, Burden Lake,Canton, Champlain, Fort COvington, Moffitt Park, Pine Bowl, Saranac Lake, Schuylerville, Trout Lake, WHites Beach, Mettowee, and other tracks whose drivers may have participated in Vermont. If I can help anyone, please do not hesitate to contact me at wladabou@comcast.net. If you haven't run across my site it is www.catamountstadium.com . I have tried to participate here before but - being somewhat stupid - I always screwed up my password. Try try again. Bill

Bill, I have found a satellite image, but dont have very much info on the track. Les King says he has photos from there, and my sprint car ride owner (CLIFF WRIGHT) has raced roadsters there, but cant remember much about the track. CHAMPLAIN SPEEDWAY AIRVIEW Thanks, Danny. It is probably the same terraserver photo I have. That is the first time I have heard anyone say they knew anything about it.

Does ANYONE, ANYWHERE, know ANYTH ING about a race track in Ticonderoga, NY namedChamplain Speedway ? There is a satellite image on the vintagemod site and Allan Brown lists it. But, just because Brown lists it doesn't mean a whole lot. I have seen a "Race Track" Road in Ticonderoga, but nobody knows anything. Bill

I would love to know what paved track in Vermont Steve Danish would have raced at, because there were virtually none except way up in the middle to northern area of the state. At one time, Malletts Bay was paved, NOrtheastern was paved, and of course Thunder Road came in in 1960. If Steve raced at any of those, I would love to know it. Bill

Hello, This is my first time on this site, and the system is a little different for adding your "two cents" to commentary being made. It is good to see the efforts in New York to find lost race tracks. Itry to do the same thing in Vermont, but I work nearly alone. I would like to see the "verified" Mettawee Speedway location, because it has been listed wrong in the satellite photo section of The Vintageracer.com for ages. In 2006, I thought I had located the correct site, only to find out in April that it was not. {Thanks to the Vogels for helping with that.] I now know, without a doubt, where Mettawee was, and there is no remains to be seen -even on satellite. My website, wwwcatamountstadiumcom is a good source for lost tracks. I hope I can manage to get this submitted correctly. Bill
