  1. All-day rain – predicted at 100-percent – has forced the postponement of Wednesday’s ‘Afton Action 50’ at Afton Motorsports Park until THURSDAY, JULY 26. The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco will headline the ‘Thursday Night Thunder’ on the Afton Fairgrounds, with a 50-lap event paying big-block/small-block Modifieds a hefty $5,000 to win and $400 to take the green plus contingency awards and bonuses. This is Race No. 4 of the STSS Halmar International North Region which offers the series champion $12,500 at year-end. Also on the open-wheel doubleheader is the STSS Crate 602 Sportsman inaugural North Region race, the first of five offering a $1,000 champion, paying $1,000 to win for 25 laps. This series was scheduled to kick off on Memorial Day weekend, but rain prompted the postponement of the opener at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Center Lisle, N.Y., to Sept. 23. The Crate 602 delayed STSS North opener gives a strong first-to-last payout and the potential to challenge for the series title. Additionally, Insinger Performance American Racer Cup Challenge points will be up for grabs toward the Sportsman North Region bonus money offered by Bruce Insinger of Insinger Performance in Dushore, Pa.
  2. The 10th anniversary of the Short Track SuperNationals is scheduled for Friday-Saturday October 6-7 at Afton Motorsports Park. This year, the American Racer Cup weekend merges with the established “Working Man’s Race” SuperNationals for one huge weekend. Saturday’s program is headlined by the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By VP Modifieds paying $5,000 to win and $400 to start plus bonuses. There have been nine winners in nine SuperNationals Modified events run thus far. New this year, American Racer Cup track champions are invited to Match Races. All participants will receive a certificate for a FREE American Racer tire. The overall winner pockets $2,000. Saturday is rounded out by Street Stocks ($1,000 to win feature and American Racer Champion’s Dash), IMCA-Modifieds and Vintage Modified feature-only event. Friday is topped by the STSS Sportsman paying $1,500 to win (*with “Gambler’s Fee” posted) and $125 to start for 35 laps. Like the Modified counterparts, American Racer Cup Sportsman track champions will be participating in Match Races with all participants getting a certificate for a FREE American Racer tire and the overall winner pocketing $1,000. CRSA Sprints, FWD Four Cylinders and practice for Modifieds and Street Stocks with incentives will take place Friday night. Modified and Sportsman American Racer Cup tire certificates from the 2017 season will be available to those in attendance. Teams not attending this weekend will have their certificates mailed afterward. 3. Short Track Super Series Brings The “Action” To Afton This Wednesday With Afton Action 50 This Wednesday night, the Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By VP brings the “action” to Afton Motorsports Park. Round No. 3 of the STSS Halmar International North Region is a 50-lap, $5,000-to-win Modified battle at the Afton Fairgrounds. Andy Bachetti and Stewart Friesen are locked into a tie for the point lead, with Anthony Perrego, Billy Decker, Jeremy Smith, Tommy Meier, Jerry Higbie, Brian Krummel, Nick Nye and Matt DeLorenzo the top-10. All of the top-10 drivers are expected to be on hand. Danny Creeden has been hampered by bad luck in the STSS North this season and sits 11th in points. Creeden headed to Afton last Friday after his home track of Accord Speedway rained out and picked up the victory. Ryan Godown won both the Afton (then I-88) events a year ago and hopes to keep his streak alive in 2017. Expected to join the STSS regulars: PA star Duane Howard in the Norm Hansell No. 357, ‘Super’ Matt Sheppard in the Sweeteners Plus No. 92s, fan-favorite Allison Ricci among the Ricci family representatives and a host of other invaders looking to take a piece of the $22,000-plus purse structure plus bonuses. The Afton regulars hope to defend their home turf as well, with drivers like Alan Barker, Mitch Gibbs, Brett Tonkin, Rusty Smith, Ken Titus and more. Joining the Modifieds are Crate 602 Sportsman in a 25-lap, $1,000-to-win, $100-to-start American Racer Challenge Cup event and FWD Four Cylinders in a $200-to-win program.
