We have some very, very sad news to report:

Doug Hoffman, a standout driving talent on dirt and pavement and most recently a track promoter at Bridgeport (N.J.) and Mahoning Valley (Pa.) speedways, passed away last night, December 24. News on Doug's services will be forthcoming.

Please pray for Doug's family at this very difficult time.

What a huge loss to the racing community and to Bridgeport Speedway in particular.

Wow, what shocking news to read on Christmas Day. Beyond all the races Hoffman won, this is definitely racing's loss. In just one year at Bridgeport, Hoffman had turned around the track and 2013 looked to be a banner year at Bridgeport.

I know there are people like Bacon Bits and Howie the Hat on here and many people on SJDR that knew Doug Hoffman far better than I did, but I got to know him a little bit when he was still racing. One of my favorite races of all-time was Doug Hoffman winning Syracuse because I knew from talking to him in the past how much the near misses ate at him. I grew up going to Dorney Park Speedway as a kid, and I can remember how shocked I was that a guy from the Late Models at the Park could become the hottest small-block driver on dirt in a matter of a couple years in the early 1980s.

Hoffman was somewhat unique among superstar drivers in that he came from a family that was not involved with racing prior to him entering the sport. Hoffman was very good on dirt (track titles at East Windsor, Bridgeport, Nazareth, Big Diamond and Penn National), but if you never saw him on Flemington's asphalt, you definitely missed something amazing.

I don't know how many of you knew that Doug started out racing a '55 Chevy on the 1/5 mile asphalt at Dorney Park, but this link shows Hoffman in his first ride. This is how I first saw Doug Hoffman the racer. A field of mostly 55-57 Chevies on a 1/5 mile track made passing difficult at best. The link also explains where the "60 over" number came from.

This is truly sad and will tie in together as the last time I went to Super Dirt week was Mid 90s and I was sitting with the Late ALEX Friesen and Alex was Doug's Spotter. This ties together with Stans passing as his Sons are brought up including Alex. Gods Speed Doug!!!

Wow very sad news. RIP Doug. Going back 15-18 years ago i met Doug at Fonda during a super dirt series race. I was in the kids club and Doug was in the redraw and i got the opportunity to redraw for him. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Hoffman family. Racing again has lost one of the greatest drivers!

This came as shocking news to all of us who worked with Doug this season at Bridgeport Speedway. I just talked with Doug at the Bridgeport awards banquet earlier this month, he was real excited about 2013, what a tragic loss. Gena and Skye, along with the entire Hoffman family are in my prayers.

I got to congradulate Doug Hoffman face to face right after he won the ESW 200 at OCFS in the early 1990's. Always liked Doug. I logged in today and saw this and was shocked! RIP Doug, you will be missed.

Back when I worked for DIRT Motorsports I did a lot of interviews with Doug.. We did a lot of specials with Doug and Billy Taylor. Over those years we started growing a pretty good relationship. Doug was one of the nicest guys to talk to. His wife was just as nice as could be. It was an honor to say I knew Doug Hoffman. I'm holding back the tears trying to write this right now. Another hero lost.
Was that the 100 lapper he won that night? I was at Fonda one night when Doug won a 100 lapper. After the race I went into his pit and asked him if he could have gone faster? He looked at me and gave me a smile and said, "No, that was it. That was as fast as I could go." What a nice guy as he always seemed so mild mannered and willing to talk to all the fans. So sorry for the entire Hoffman family.
