Pompey Returns to Victory Lane at Penn Can

SUSQUEHANNA, PA – Just as many tracks are finishing the point season and the weather cooling down, Penn Can Speedway is starting to heat up. The 2017-point system will end on King of the Can weekend Oct. 13th and 14th for all divisions. One must think that there will be some invaders in the coming month. A weekly pill draw and no handicapping opens the door for any driver looking to run.

Current points leader, Dan Pompey, returned to victory lane in a much-needed win. He hopes to stall the hard charging Joey Grammes and pad the points lead. If Fridays race is any indication of the points battle in the closing weeks, look out. Kevin Hartnett looks to make it a three-way battle. Hartnett is 158 points shy of Pompey with Grammes only 120 points behind. Everyone knows that one night of racing could shake up any points battle.

This Friday September 1st will see 50 laps of modified action with the 1st annual Modified Spectacular. The twist is no one will know the format till race day. Will it be a twin 25 format with a redraw or straight up 50 laps of pure modified power? Pompey could keep Grammes at bay but will he keep two of Penn Cans best knocking on the door.

Mike Schane and Mike Nagel jr. continue the dominating year the 2 602 crate drivers have had. Tonight, would be Schane making the trip to victory lane. Marty Bunker, pilot of the Barton owned #42, had a better handle of the car with a third-place finish.

Brothers Jamie and Tim Frantz made it a family affair in the 20 lap Xcel Chassis 600 modified feature. Tim would pilot the #101 of Doug Lattner and put it thru its paces. The two have always been competitive and Friday was no exception. The first 10 laps went back and forth. Tim took the lead by lap 10 and would never look back. On September 15th, the Xcel modified will honor one of their own. The first Carl Kithcart Memorial will bring the north and south tours together for 40 laps of pure excitement.

The 4-cylinder division has had some of the closest racing this year. The points race couldn’t get any closer. Mike Robinson and Nick Kennedy are now tied with 1510 points. Now you add Joshua Wilder, who is only 85 points behind. Jeremy Warren stays in the mix with a point deficit of 145. This looks to come down to the wire at the King of the Can weekend.

Tommy Groover looked to be the winner of the 20 lap Factory Stock feature and be the first one in the division to have a bounty placed on him. Randy Fox would finish second with Buck Mills jr. rounding out the top three. Due to the top two failing post-race inspection, Mills was awarded the win in the popular “57” Chevy. Both cars were found to have unapproved suspension parts. The penalties levied to Tommy Groover and Randy Fox were no points awarded for the nights events. Due to the win taken away, there will be no bounty on Tom Groover.

Penn Can Speedway supports the local youth in every aspect of their young lives. The Susquehanna Sabers varsity football and Jr. Sabers football along with both cheerleading squads have been invited to the Speedway. All players and cheerleaders will be admitted for free (parents will need to pay) and introduced during intermission. Come and show the future of our area the support they deserve.
