Mahaney Dominates the Day; Heat Races in the Books for Super DIRTcar Series at World Finals

CONCORD, NC – Time Trials and two sets of five heats were held on Thursday night for the Super DIRTcar Series in preparation for two 40-lap features on Friday and Saturday at the Textron Off-Road World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

In time trials, Mike Mahaney was the man to beat in both sessions with a pair of laps in the mid 15-second bracket. In the first set of time trials he turned a lap of 15.609 and in the second set he a tick slower at 15.678.  He also swept his heat races to complete the perfect night.

“It couldn’t be any better that’s for sure,” said Mahaney. “We’ve come down here [in the past] and kind of struggled. We gained a lot of fans the one time we came down here and passed everyone in the Last Chance Showdown and everyone got excited. But to come down and feel like we came out of the box with a really good car. We timed first in both sessions and won the heat races; that will set us up great for the weekend. I couldn’t be prouder of our Buzz Chew Racing Team. We’ve just been doing everything perfect.”

Mahaney led Friday heat one from wire-to-wire over Brian Swartzlander and Danny Johnson. While Swartzlander held close, within five car lengths, he ultimately could not close on Mahaney. Johnson finished third, and Pat Ward claimed the fourth and final transfer spot.

It was all Mat Williamson during Friday heat two, as the Ontario driver led all eight laps en route to the win. Tyler Siri launched to second on the start of the event and held the position for the remainder of the race. Ryan Godown and Jimmy Horton finished third and fourth to qualify for the main.

Matt Sheppard ran away and hid during Friday heat three as the Super DIRTcar Series point leader led the entire show for another heat win. Importantly, Sheppard scored five crucial points towards his sixth title. Larry Wight, Billy Whittaker and Gary Tomkins also qualified for Friday’s events.

Keith Flach got the jump off of the initial start in Friday’s fourth heat and paced the field for the whole race. Yan Bussiere made his long drive from Quebec worth it by finishing second. He was chased across the line by Justin Haers and Tim Fuller.

Teenager Demetrios Drellos snuck out in front of Billy Decker at the start of Friday heat five and held off the veteran for his first heat win on the Super DIRTcar Series tour. Justin Wright held strong to finish third, while Peter Britten passed Jim Rasey late for the last qualifying position.

Saturday’s program picked off right where Friday left off, with Drellos walking away from the pack to win Saturday’s first heat, his second heat race win of the night. Johnson got by Dave Blaney to finish second, with Carey Terrance slipping around Chad Jeseo on the last lap for the fourth transfer position.

In Saturday heat two, Sheppard dominated to also go back-to-back on the evening. Both Britten and Siri jumped past Hile for second and third on the opening lap, but neither driver could hang pace with second. Britten held steady in second, followed by Siri and Hile to qualify.

“We’re just down here to trying to win,” said Sheppard after his heats. “Last year we got a little taste of not having point pressure and we just let it all hang out and we were good all weekend. That was a lot more fun.  We’re going to go out there and run the crap out of it and see if we can win some races.”

Just like earlier, Decker ran a close second in his heat race. This time, the man he was chasing was Mahaney, who rolled to his second heat win of the night in Saturday’s third heat. He third repeat winner in the third Saturday qualifier. Also qualifying was Haers and Erick Rudolph.

Flach drove away from the field in Saturday heat four, leading the way over earlier winner Williamson. Flach went completely unchallenged, winning over Williamson, Ward, and Tomkins. Flach made it four repeat winners in four Saturday heats on the fast Charlotte surface.

Fuller stuck his nose in front of Tim Kerr to lead at the start of Saturday heat five, with Kerr then falling under pressure from Ryan Godown. A yellow flew with three laps to go for mechanical issues on Rick Regalski’s car. On the restart, Fuller and Kerr made contact, with Kerr taking a big shot into the turn one wall. When the calamity calmed, it was Fuller winning over Godown, Wight, and Swartzlander.
