THOROLD, ONT – Motorists are well aware of the benefits their myHusky app has with rewards points redeemable at almost 50 Husky branded locations across Canada.
Merrittville Speedway’s Bobcat of Hamilton Weekly Racing Series drivers will benefit from cash benefits collected through various fund-raising activities created through the efforts of St. Catharines Husky’s Tracy Palleschi.
“When we first discussed the idea of a night to benefit our racers … Tracy took on the challenge … Thanks to her for all the work she has done,” said Merrittville Speedway’s Don Spiece, “there’s an extra $8,000 guaranteed … and it will probably increase by Saturday.”
The final event for the month of August will feature 4 Divisions with the S&W Service Centre 358 Modifieds featured in a unique 74 lap Harry Sittler Memorial Main Event in addition to the first visit of the ROC Dirt Sportsman Series and the Hoosier Stocks and Central Fabricating and Welding 4 Cylinder Division in extra distance events.
“Even though the 358 Modifieds will run a 74 lap Event … we will honour Harry’s memory for the second time with two 37 lap segments,” added Merrittville Race Director Tom Beales, “after a mandatory red on lap 37 … pit stops on the front stretch will allow fans a view of the action as teams prepare for the final 37 lap run to the checkered flag.”
Chad Brachmann of Sanborn NY won the inaugural 37 lap Harry Sittler Memorial 2017. The 2nd Annual event will pay the winner $3000 with start money $500.
Harry Sittler got his start in racing in the former Jalopy Division in 1961 with a car that his dad Andrew flat-towed to the track from the family’s home in Queenston, Ontario. Sittler would move up to the former Late Model Division before stepping into a Modified owned by fellow CAA Niagara Wall of Famer Ray Stevens in 1974.
Sittler would drive for a number of different owners over his career in addition to stints as car owner himself in the 1960’s. 1970’s. 1980’s 1990’s and 2000’s.
Sittler’s trademark ‘37’ was established when the St. Catharines Driver was team-mates with Harley Turner (Mini Stock), Carl Game (Late Model) and his own Modified. 37 was the only number that would work for all three divisions.
In recent years, Sittler’s only son Andrew has raced himself eventually becoming car owner for a number of drivers that in 2018 includes Tommy Flannigan in the familiar 37s.
Although making it’s first ever visit to the Thorold d-shaped oval for the 30 lap Event – the Race of Champions is a sanctioning body presenting racing on asphalt and dirt surfaces throughout the Northeast. The Lake Erie Speedway will host the 68th Annual Race of Champions Weekend this fall.
Port Colborne’s Chad Chevalier won the ROC Sportsman Series Championship in 2017.
Rounding out the event will be a 25 lap Event for the Hoosier Stocks with the 4 Cylinders going 20 laps. For a complete listing of the current Purse click on https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10155515129832382&set=gm.10156351126835731&type=3&theater&ifg=1
