Smith Takes Main; Malcolm Named Champ at Five Mile Point

KIRKWOOD, NY – Rusty Smith recorded the victory at Five Mile Point Speedway on Season Championship Night, it was his second of the season. Brian Malcolm with his runner-up finish locked up his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway Modified Track Championship. Malcolm and Smith made their weekly returns to Five Mile Point Speedway pay off as the duo led the point battle for the majority of the season even being tied mid-way through the 2018 campaign.

Entering the evening Malcolm, Nick Rochinski, Smith, Mike Colsten and Joey Colsten were all still mathematically in the hunt for the championship. Joey Colsten started fifth on the field with Malcolm starting sixth. Mike Colsten and Nick Rochinski started tenth and eleventh respectively. Rusty Smith started on the outside pole after fuel pump issues resulted in a disappointing sixteenth place finish the week prior.

Barry White and Smith led the Modified field to the green flag in the 30 lap Season Championship event. Smith wasted no time taking the race lead at the start. The outside line at the quarter mile was certainly the place to be as Smith utilized it to open up his lead as Glenn Knapp followed suite to move from fourth to second immediately as well. Malcolm also utilized the outside line to charge from sixth to third place during the early stages as Mike Colsten locked to the bottom and Rochinski on the far outside also worked forward providing for outstanding action on the quarter mile.

Smith was hooked up on the outside of the quarter mile and encountered his first lapped traffic cars by lap 11. On lap 14 Malcolm raced by Knapp for second place as both Mike Colsten and Rochinski had broken in to the top five. By the midway point Smith had two lapped cars and a straightway lead as his cushion between himself and Malcolm. Now Knapp, Colsten and Rochinski put on a great race for third through fifth all utilizing different lines on the speedway. On lap 21 Rochinski made his way past Colsten for fourth place and dispatched of Knapp on the very next lap for third.

Malcolm was unable to make up any serious ground on Smith over the final circuits as lapped cars continued to separate the front duo. At the finish Smith did all he could to try and win his first title at the speedway by winning the feature event. Malcolm, and his season long body of work proved to be the difference as his runner-up finish was enough to capture the 2018 Modified Track Championship. Rochinski wound up third after starting eleventh and also earned the $250 Hard Charger Award from the Dick Longstreet Family. Mike Colsten started tenth and finished fourth and Knapp had another strong run for fifth place.

Remarkably, the top four finishers also wound up the top four in the final Modified point standings as they all raced it out on the speedway to determine the title the best way possible. The caution free feature was also the second out of the last four feature races for the Modified division this season. Malcolm won the Modified Track Championship with 577 points, 1 feature win, including 5 top five finishes in just 12 races. Smith ended up second with 565 points and 2 feature wins. Rochinski finished the season out strong with 1 feature win on his way to third place in the final standings. Rochinski also flipped earlier in the season during the feature and still finished the feature event. Mike Colsten wound up fourth in points with his son Joey finishing fifth. The elder Colsten did not record a win but Joey did lock down to early season victories.

Fourteen-year old Alex Yankowski not only left Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday evening as the Crate Sportsman Track Champion but he did so with a statement victory. Yankowski recorded 5 feature wins at the speedway in 11 starts and had 10 top five finishes. He missed a night of racing and still had enough to lock down the championship. Two of his victories came in Crate Sportsman Summer Slam events.

On Saturday Garden State driver Brad Cicio raced out to the early lead over Jeremy Williams. Fifth place starter Devon Zona worked his way up to second place as sixth place starter Tanner Harpell followed him to third during the early going. Yankowski, who started eleventh followed tenth place starter Tommy Collins, Jr. through the field as they began their march forward. Matt Cole, who entered the evening second in points had a tough start as he and Randy Fox were part of a lap 8 caution.

When racing resumed Cicio found Yankowski on his back bumper but he did not waiver and continued to show the way around the quarter mile. Zona, Harpell, Collins and Blaine Klinger had a great battle going on for positions three through six using all of the speedway lap after lap. On lap 11 Yankowski worked his way around Cicio for the race lead as the battle for third continued to be a great race. Meanwhile, Cole was trying to work his through the field with no cautions aiding his championship pursuit. Harpell was also mathematically alive but as the laps wound down he would need Yankowski to run in to trouble to have a title shot.

The final caution of the race flew on lap 18 as Joe Guastella slowed on the speedway. Blaine Klinger headed pit side after contact from another car earlier in the race punctured his left rear tire. He had entered the evening fourth in points. On the restart Yankowski pulled back out front as Cicio continued his strong run in second. Now Zona, Collins and Harpell tried to work their way around Cicio as Ryan McCartney ran just outside the top five. At the finish it would be Yankowski for win number five on the season. Cicio had his best finish of the season in second with Zona, Harpell and Collins completing the top five. Yankowski locked up the Track Championship with Matt Cole’s tenth place finish being enough to hang on to second place in the standings. Tanner Harpell wound up third in points with Devon Zona and Tom Collins fourth in fifth in the final point race.

Ray Lindquist entered the evening as the Street Stock point leader but defending Track Champion Doug Polhamus had other ideas. Polhamus entered the evening in third place in the standings only 8 markers behind Lindquist. Polhamus took the lead on lap 3 and never looked back winning the feature and the Track Championship by only 2 points. Lindquist did everything he could do with a strong third place finish to capture second in the final standings. Tyler Yeagle entered the evening second in points and his fourth place finish backed him up to third in the final standings. Keith Beach and Matt Bowman ended up fourth in the final standings. The 20 lap Street Stock Championship event was slowed by only one caution on lap 2.

Bailey Boyd raced to his sixth 600 Modified victory of the season on Saturday and also locked up his first Track Championship in the process. For Boyd the wins were part of a total of ten top five finishes along the way this season. On Saturday if not for a late race caution the win total may have remained at five. Damon Henry took the lead from Adam Mudge on lap 3 and looked strong out front as he looked for win number two on the season. Henry led as a great battle ensued between Mudge, Mike Wilcha, Boyd and Scott Landers. Wilcha moved in to second on lap 14 and immediately closed the gap on Henry out front. On lap 17 Henry entered turn 1 and lost the grip causing him to start to spin. Wilcha, unfortunately was collected in the incident as the top two were finished for the evening. Mudge became the race leader as he too was looking for win number two on the season. On the restart Boyd moved past and would lead the final three laps for the victory. Mudge finished second with Rich Christman, Tyler Smith and James Randall completing the top five.

Justin Slezak won his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway in the 15 lap Factory Stock feature event. Slezak led every lap and was never seriously challenged out front. With his third place finish Charlie Gilbert locked up the Factory Stock Track Championship.

Nick Kennedy was the Lightning Cat Season Championship race winner by only inches over Brian Salmini. The win also led Kennedy to his second straight Expert Track Championship. Salmini was last year’s Novice division champion and was inches away from his first Expert win. Steve Lunn was dominate in the Lightning Cat Novice Feature with his victory. It was Randy Lane locking up the 2018 Track Championship in his second year of racing.

COUNTER POINTS…The racing on Saturday was fantastic in all of the divisions with very limited caution periods…The track provided for three and four wide racing throughout the evening…The Modified feature was raced they way that all title events should be…The race went caution free and every driver threw everything they had at their own title hopes…Brian Malcolm was thrilled with his return to Five Mile Point Speedway and didn’t waste any time this season re-establishing his comfort level on the way to his first ever FMP Modified Track Championship…Malcolm, the driver of the Grimm Construction/Troyer 119 is a popular figure within the division as well…Even though Rusty Smith came up just short in his title pursuit he joined his grandfather on the all-time track win list..His grandfather was also one of the greatest 50 Five Mile Point Speedway Driver’s of All-Time when the list was released in 2000…Both Malcolm and Smith left nothing on the table as they each also won their qualifying heat races earlier in the night…For Nick Rochinski he will have to wonder if a yellow flag could have changed the outcome of his title hopes as he charged from eleventh to third, the same can be said of Mike Colsten with his drive from tenth to fourth…Glenn Knapp finished the point season strong with five straight top ten finishes after early season mechanical problems slowed his pursuit…

Five Mile Point Speedway is back in action on Saturday, September 15th and 16th with the National Quarter Mile Dirt Track Championship Weekend and Summer Slam finales for all classes…
