Rouse, Thompson, Marcuccilli and Guererri Wins Sportsman Heats; Casey and Older Take Pro Stocks at WSTC

CONCORD, NC – Four heats for the 35 DIRTcar Sportsman were held Saturday night at the Short Track World Championship, with Brad Rouse, Tyler Thompson, Dave Marcuccilli, and Matt Guererri winning their respective qualifying events.

Brad Rouse led the field to the green in the first 8-lap heat race, with Brandon Ford starting second. Ford’s long trip to Charlotte ended nearly immediately, with Ford being turned sideways on the opening lap and hit by a number of cars. Once racing resumed, Anthony Stockman grabbed the vacated second spot, but couldn’t hunt down Rouse over the course of the race. Rouse, Stockman, Jackson Gill, Alan Fink, and Chris Curtis claimed the first five transfer spots through Heat 1.

Heat two got off to a rocky beginning, as Australian Chris Corbett was turned around before the field even took the green, collecting a total of five cars. All kept going, and Tyler Thompson ran away from the field when the green flag flew. Jessica Power settled into second, but third on back turned into a brawl. When the checkered fell, it was Thompson winning by over five seconds over Power, Corbett, Robert Bublak, and Nicole Hoag.

In a significantly different change of pace, Heat 3 was clean and green. Dave Marcuccilli started on pole, and to little surprise jumped out to the early lead. Jeff Taylor held with Marcuccilli in the opening circuits, but Marcuccilli began to pull away as the laps clicked off. Marcuccilli claimed victory, with Taylor, Bob Henry, Kyle Inman, and Kevin Chaffee completing the top five.

Heat four saw Kevin Root take control at the start with Matt Guererri slotting in behind. Guererri held close to Root, staying within a car though the first circuits, but Guererri was finding speed down low while Root rode high. Guererri’s different lane choice paid off, as Guererri got a great launch of the bottom to take the lead at halfway. Over the last four laps, Guererri pulled away from the pack, and Guererri claimed the last heat win for the Sportsman over Root, David Schilling, Adam Pierson, and Rocco Leone.

The DIRTcar Pro Stocks made their first appearance at the Short Track World Championship, with 18 cars making the long haul down. This lined up two six-lap heats for the field with all making the journey starting the feature.

Jay Casey led the start of the first Pro Stock heat over Jason Casey, with Jason following right in Jay’s tire tracks. As the Casey team pulled away from third on back, Jay pushed high on lap three, allowing Jason to dart to the bottom and steal the lead. At the finish, it was Jason Casey claiming the first heat win over Jay Casey, Luke Horning, Jonathan Routhier, and Rock Aubin.

The second heat saw Dan Older put the throttle down and lead early over Super Dirt Week runner-up Chuck Dumblewksi. Over the six laps, Older continued to pull away over the field, as Bruno Cyr, Nick Stone, and Jocelyn Roy fought hard for third. However, that battle was a big distance behind Older, and Older snagging the win over Dumblewski, Cyr, Stone, and Roy.
