Jeremy Wonderling Garners Genesee RUSH LM Win

By RICH VLECK

BATAVIA, NY – Jeremy Wonderling may have been the most noteworthy winner on the night at Genesee Speedway, but almost everyone went home a winner as the 1/3-mile oval defied Mother Nature to ensure racing got in.

A week after racing got knocked out for the first time this season, Genesee Speedway pushed to get through Saturday Night’s show on MHL Performance Night featuring the RUSH Late Model Tour. Five laps in to the second feature a massive system moved over the Genesee Speedway and with all indications made it appear racing would be halted for the remainder of the night. After an hour of steady rain, however, the track crew got hard to work to get the track traceable and complete the fourth night of the season.

The RUSH Late Models were moved to the tail of the program to ensure space to run their 30-lap feature and even though it took a while to get a few laps logged in, the product would be some fast and intense moments. On a lap two restart, Jeremy Wonderling used the outside line to power around 2018 Genesee RUSH Tour winner Jason Genco and set sail to score his third-straight victory on tour. The pass was a hair-raising moment with the top two in 2018 series points making contact along the way.

“You had to keep the car away from the (outside frontstretch) wall or else the car wanted to shoot all over the place so we definitely got pretty close,” described Wonderling, of Wellsville, in Victory Lane. “This car is just so good but it still got tricky in the lapped traffic.”

On two occasions, Wonderling saw a lead of around 2.5 seconds evaporate with a caution flag regrouping the field. The key on the ensuing restarts was his ability to power the No. 3J off of turn four to clear Genco and reestablish his dominance over the field.

As Wonderling rode away to the victory, Genco would have to fend off young Braeden Dillinger for 2nd. Kurt Stebbins would have a solid run in fourth while Kyle Lukon drove forward from outside the top 10 to round out the top five.

The night featured the Rush Late Model Touring Series, with 28 competitive cars hitting the racing oval. David Pangrazio was quickest in time trials with a 17.601 second lap and backed it up by winning his heat, joining Jeremy Wonderling and Jason Genco with qualifying wins. Genco would then win the dash as the teams were hustling to get the program in before the rains hit.

John Zimmerman was able to find some power in the middle groove of the speedway to notch his first win of the year in the Street Stock Feature. Zimmerman, of Varysburg, NY, paced the field all 20 laps, but a caution flag with four laps remaining saw five cars that has been breathing down his neck get a chance to regroup and give him one last chase. Zimmerman was steady working off the corner though and the former 360 Late Model driver was able to pull away from Kurt Stebbins, Josh Pangrazio, Bill Taylor and Pat Powers, who completed the top five.

With 5 laps complete in the Mini Stock Feature, the first caution came out for a stopped car and at that point rain became too intense to continue racing. Brad Whiteside was the leader at the time but after the 2.5 hour delay for rain his No. 46 car would not work as well when the race restarted. The track was slick for the field but the final 10 laps ran off green with Bill Weller Jr. and Rich Conte swapping for the lead on three occasions. Weller would be able to lead the final four circuits for his first win at Genesee since 2016 while Conte would hang on for second. Brandon Shepard drove up to third as Mike Taddonio and Don Whiteside rounded out the top five.

The only feature event to be completed before the rain was in the Bandit division where Allison Dewitt continued her early season dominance of the division, leading all 12 laps without much contention to collect her third win in the first four weeks of 2019. Dewitt, of LeRoy, was also able to win the heat race earlier in the night. The best battle in the event was for second place, which was exchanged on a number of occasions. Tyler Guzzardi was able to make the final pass on Greenley George to finish in the runner-up spot.

The winning 50-50 ticket was drawn as the rains moved in and was Ticket 968057.

Next week, the sportsman return to make it a Five Star Racing Program, presented by Jasper Engines and The Detail Shop. It will be kid’s night out and also the 2nd Mini Stock Mini Series Race. Racing will start at 6:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.Genesee-Speedway.com.
