Makin’ Tracks – Brewerton Nine Heats, Two Features and RAIN – DTD Exclusive

By BILL FOLEY

There was absolutely no one who thought the Friday night racing at the Brewerton Speedway would happen.

Storms surrounded the track and wave after wave of dark, water infested clouds rolled toward the Route 11 facility.

Even as race time approached a line of formidable “going to rain you out” clouds were rolling from the south.

Well, the decision was to “go for it” and at 7:25 p.m. the first heat hit the track. Nine heats got in and then with no intermission the quest was on to beat the storms from the west as the winds had dramatically shifted.

The Late Models and Kevan Cook got their main in and then it was time for Chuck Powelczyk to chalk up his 89th career Four Cylinder victory.

It was hustle mode in the pits and there was a brief extra couple of laps in the Mod main to get all of the cars on the speedway.

Well, four laps got in and the rain started. Obviously this wasn’t going to let up at all and immediately (before the surface got too slick) the Mods were sent pitside and that was it for the night.

In just about an hour in as the track officials had moved the show along as quickly as possible.

The die hard fans who showed up saw some racing, but in the end the Mod and Sportsman features will line up at a future date to provide doubleheader racing action.

When the field resets it will be Jeremy Smith leading the Mods, but that will be another day.

Wright Refuses to Rent to Hulsizer

Okay so the headline is a bit misleading, but I got you to continue reading.

Matt Hulsizer said, “I lost the cam in the motor last Saturday night and the motor won’t be back until next week. I called Larry Wight to ask him if I could rent a car. He said no, but that I could just take it. “

Larry brought it to the track in his own trailer, stopped at the 55 pit stall and unloaded it for a fellow competitor.

Hulsizer said, “I owe him big time. Otherwise I would not be racing this weekend.”

They’re Superstitious Even When Young

Recently Mike Stanton chalked up a Sportsman feature win.

Standing around the concession area on Friday before the action he said, “I have the same socks, shirt, pants and underwear that I wore. I bought food last week and three quarters, all the same year and same state. I found two heads up pennies this week and now I have 77 cents taped to my dashboard. I also haven’t shaved for two weeks, but I could not shave for four weeks before anything happened.”

Andrew Ferguson has been running fairly well at Brewerton, but the slick Fulton track is another thing. The second year big block driver said, “It is like having 850 horsepower on ice and that is not ideal. Sometimes I just feel like I am being attacked out there. I feel good with it, but oh those slick tracks.”…

A few weeks ago I did a piece on Jim Butler who builds brass frame models of Mods. He’s doing one of Pat Ward now. He showed me a shock he built. It was an Integra shock. Problem is Pat switched to Penske so Jim won’t use the Integra shocks he built as now he has to construct Penske shocks in model scale…
