Rudolph Rides to DIRTcar 358 Modified Victory on Night 2 of Applefest Shootout Weekend

(By ROD HENDERSON) By JOSH GORDON

BRIGHTON, ONT – The final night of the Part Source Applefest Shootout lived up to expectations as 103 cars filed into the Brighton Speedway for 265 laps of feature race action. The evening was highlighted by the only appearance of the year for the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds.

Rudolph Runs Away with Victory

Erik Rudolph (No. 25) was not going to leave the Brighton Speedway this weekend without a victory. The DIRTcar 358 Modified regular led 98 of the 100 laps on route to his second win in as many years at the one-third mile oval. The only two times he lost his lead were on laps immediately following a restart when Danny O’Brien (No. 17d) got the jump on him.

After a couple of cautions in the first 10 laps of the race, a long green flag run propelled Rudolph to the front of the field. By lap 35, Rudolph had extended his lead to eight seconds over the second-place O’Brien. By lap 60, that lead was stretched to 12 seconds. When caution finally came out again on lap 67, O’Brien was the only car that had not been lapped by the flying Rudolph.

Three more cautions in the final 33 laps of the race meant that five of the 22-car field finished the race on the lead lap. But even with those late cautions, Rudolph still managed to win the 100-lap main event by almost four seconds.

Sandercock Slithers Past Earl

Sixty-five laps were just enough for Charlie Sandercock (No. 57), as he narrowly edged Corey Earl (No. 11) in the only visit of the year for the Go Nuclear Late Model Series. For Sandercock it was the ninth time he visited Victory Lane in his Late Model at the Brighton Speedway this year.

Kyle Sopaz (No. 12) and Adam Turner (No. 17cr) brought the field to green for the start of the main event but Sandercock did not take the lead until lap 27. Sandercock was able to extend his lead until a lap 33 caution. On the ensuing restart, third-place starter Corey Earl (No. 11) took the lead using the low side of the racing surface to get past the speedy Sandercock. For a short time, it looked like Earl was going to hold off Sandercock but a lap 59 caution tightened the field and set up a six lap dash to the finish.

On the restart, Sandercock narrowly got the jump on Earl and used the high side of the race track to narrowly edge the Picton, Ontario native coming out of turn four, beating him by 0.3 seconds.

Hennessey’s Much Needed Win

Andrew Hennessey (No. 87) came into the final Bainer’s OilGARD Canadian Modified point race of the year trailing Dan Ferguson (No. 11) by only 35 points, but was in tough position starting 12th. Ferguson on the other hand started seventh, giving him the early advantage over Hennessey.

Ferguson did not waste any time getting the jump on Hennessey, taking the lead on lap 2. While Ferguson was extending his lead, Hennessy struggled early, not moving into the top three until lap 18.

But in a 50-lap race Hennessey had lots of time. He eventually caught Ferguson coming out of a lap 27 caution and took the lead. A lap 45 caution set up a five lap sprint to the finish. But Ferguson spun coming out of turn four on lap 48, depriving fans of the photo finish and giving Hennessey the breathing room he needed to pick up his fifth victory of the year.

Ramsay Sweeps Weekend

For the first 34 laps of the 50-lap Duel in the Dirt Pro Stock feature it was another great battle between Justin Ramsay (No. 03) and Doug Anderson (No. 72). The sixth and fifth place starters respectively battled to the front of the field by lap 16, and were side-by-side for the next 18 laps.

But on lap 35, contact between Anderson and Jason Fontaine (No. 1j) took Anderson out of the race and that was all Ramsay needed to pick up the victory. Ramsay held off Brandon Murrell (No. 19) and Mark Fawcett (No. 32) in the final laps of the race.

Ramsay came into the night second in Duel in the Dirt points, trailing only Dave Bailey (No. 49) who finished fourth. The Duel in the Dirt is a special touring series of Pro Stocks that race at the Brighton, Ohsweken, Merritville, and Humberstone Speedways.

Next Week at Brighton Speedway

A 1 p.m. start is on tap next week for the annual Eve of Destruction. The afternoon will be jammed packed with enduro races, the Brighton Recycling Demolition Derby and the ever-popular Workman’s OK Tire & Auto School Bus Races.
