Williamson Continues Hot Streak With Hurricane 100 Victory – DTD Exclusive

From Bobby Sweeney

BREWERTON, N.Y. (October 10, 2019) — Mat Williamson is on fire. A win at Utica-Rome, last to third at Weedsport, and now a win at Brewerton describe the last three nights of DIRTcar 358-Modified Series competition, as Williamson scored the Hurricane 100 win.

“We had a real good hot rod,” Williamson said. “Confidence is sky high right now, all our cars are running really good. We just have a really good combination and it’s showing.”

Mat Williamson got the best of Chad Brachmann at the drop of the green, setting the pace in the opening laps of the Hurricane 100. Brachmann didn’t stay settled for long, as he found a lane up high and worked by Williamson to snag the lead by lap eight. While prior winner of the event Brachmann caught and passed Williamson, he had a hard time pulling away, as Williamson stayed with Brachmann right up until a lap 18 yellow for Todd Root slowing.

Williamson caught some rough stuff on the restart, momentarily giving up second to Tim Sears Jr. Note the momentarily, as Williamson got by Sears to retake second on lap 26, and eighth starter Erick Rudolph followed through for third. Williamson quickly caught Brachmann when he got back to second, but a lap 31 yellow for Lance Willix breaking halted their battle.

A second rough restart for Williamson handed second to Rudolph, while Mike Mahaney nearly got by for third. Williamson fended off Mahaney, then went chasing after Rudolph to try and get second back. This fighting allowed Brachmann to get his first taste of breathing room all night, but another caution for Ryan Bartlett slowing on lap 43 deleted that lead.

With Brachmann picking the bottom, Rudolph was put up top for the restart. This proved to give advantage to Rudolph, as he got faster on the cushion every lap after the restart, finding a very high lane entering turn one. Using this, Rudolph blasted by Brachmann to take the lead at halfway. Williamson then looked to follow in Rudolph’s tire tracks, but Ryan Arbuthnot slowed on lap 53 to draw a caution. Under this caution, Brachmann headed to the pits and called it a night.

When racing resumed, it was Rudolph now leading over Williamson. Ever so slowly, Rudolph pulled away from Williamson, building up a gap of just under two seconds by lap 70. It was a ways back to third running Mahaney, who was now under pressure from Mike Maresca. Up front, Rudolph was about to hit traffic for the first time all race, but Tim Sears shredded a right rear tire to draw the yellow on lap 77.

On the restart, Rudolph did not fire good, but Williamson did. The result was a lead change, with Williamson driving by Rudolph to reclaim the top spot. From there, it was a role reversal of the prior run, with now Williamson slowly pulling away from Rudolph as all the frontrunners blasted the cushion. As the laps wound down, Williamson was able to hold a steady second and a half gap over Rudolph, a gap that stayed consistent until the checkered flag fell. Crossing the finish line first was Mat Williamson, followed by Erick Rudolph, Mike Maresca, Billy Decker, and Mike Mahaney.

In a scene like Fulton’s DIRTcar 358-Modified Series event in June, Rudolph and Williamson decided a race off a late restart, and like before, Rudolph got the short end of the deal.

“He beat me back to the line on the restart,” Rudolph said. “I guess we just didn’t fire good. A top three is good going into the weekend, we just need to finish off these races.”

Maresca grabbed his second podium in two nights, as a driver who has suddenly became one of the hottest in the division claimed third at the end of the Hurricane 100.

“Started eighth, fell back some, hit the hole in turn one,” said Maresca. “Everyone started going above it, I found a good lane up there and got around some people and ended up third.”
