Markou Shakes Off Rust to Win the Pro Stock Pole at Oswego – DTD Exclusive

By T.J. Buffenbarger

OSWEGO, N.Y. (October 11, 2019) — Tony Markou started his first appearance at Oswego Speedway on a high note by winning the pole position during qualifying for the DIRTcar Pro Stock Division on Friday afternoon. Markou turned a lap of 24.585 seconds around the 5/8-mile oval to top Josh Coonradt by .065 seconds.

After qualifying was completed Markou was emotional at his accomplishment at the biggest race of the year at a race track he had not laid eyes on until this weekend.

“This is the first time I’ve ever been here,” said Markou. “I’m relying on my crew chief and my guys to make adjustments on the car based on the feedback I give them, and they nail it. I’m blessed, I truly feel blessed.”

Markou returned to the Pro Stock division after a long layoff from participating in motor sports.

“I actually raced for many years a long time ago and gave it up to raise my family. Now I’m back after 20 years of absence from racing. Now I want to travel and do as much racing as I can.”

Markou is making the most of the second chapter of his racing career including his first even visit to Super DIRT Week.

“This is huge for me just because there has been a lot of personal battles for me the last three years. If everybody is done and that time stands, I’m ecstatic,” Markou exclaimed in just a brief moment where he wasn’t quite sure if qualifying was completed. “That means the world to me.”

Markou is locked into Sunday’s finale along with Coonradt, Luke Horning, Dany Vogel, C.D. Beauchamp, and Frank Twing in the first six starting positions.
