FULTON, NY – August 11, 2012 (By Dave Medler) – It was a night of firsts in the Modifieds and Sportsman, Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway, as Chuck Bower and Ron Davis III won their first ever features on the “High Banks.”
In the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, Chuck Bower started 11th taking the lead on lap 9 from Brian Murphy exiting turn four running the bottom on the multi-grooved speedway. Once out front, Bower was dominate till a caution on lap 34 of the 35 lap feature putting Ryan Phelps on his back bumper for the one lap dash to the checkers. On the restart , Bower was not to be denied as he beat Phelps to the checkers by 0.341 of a second at the line.
In the SUNY Canton Sportsman, Ron Davis III like Bower, started 11th taking the lead with 5 laps to go in the highly competitive 20 lap feature. Once in the lead, Davis held off current points leader Jordan Bennett for the popular win.
Other winners on Stadium International Trucks night were, Alan Fink, NAPA Late Models, Chris Hulsizer, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, Doug Williams, Mod Lites and Jerry Herbert, Parts Four Cylinder Stocks.
Shane Donath and Brian Murphy brought the starting field down to the green with Murphy grabbing the narrow early advantage in the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature.
With 5 laps showing on lap counter, Murphy still led using the top of the speedway as he was being chased by Matt Fink, Mike Bowman, Chuck Bower and Donath.
While the battles were going on out front, Chuck Bower was picking cars off one at a time using the bottom of the speedway. On lap 9, Bower shot by Murphy to be scored the new leader.
By lap 15, Bower was running quick laps as he built up a full straightaway lead over Fink. Behind the top-two, Murphy, Donath, Ryan Phelps who started 16th and Pat Ward raced for top-five spots.
With 20 laps showing on the scoring tower, Bower was still on rails as he maintained his big lead. Fink, Phelps, Ward and Chad Phelps showed in the top-five.
With no yellows to tighten the field up at the 10 lap to go mark, Bower was putting lapped cars between himself and Ryan Phelps as he was still way out front.
Just when it looked like Bower was going to cruise to the easy win unchallenged, a yellow flew with one lap to go, putting past feature winner Phelps on his back bumper for a one lap dash to the checkers.
When the green came back out, there was no denying Bower as he darted away on the restart to be the first under the checkers. Ryan Phelps, Matt Fink, Chad Phelps and Pat Ward finished second through fifth. Matt Hulsizer, Larry Wight, Tom Sears Jr., Mike Mahaney and Shane Donath completed the top-ten.
Chuck Bower talked about his win after putting his Ingles Performance/No.99B/Bicknell in victory lane.
“Harvey (Fink) talked to me and talked to me, saying you got to get up here. We finally made the decision we were going to run both Brewerton and Fulton. It’s been a tough road. It’s awesome competition, you can’t say enough about it.”
“I thought we had one about a month ago. We were running the bottom, the car was real good. Ryan (Phelps) got us on the top and we were second best. Tonight I didn’t want to see that caution at the end. We were getting a lot of lappers between us. The car was really good, I guess it was our night.”
“The car was good and this track has been multi-grooved. The top has been good and the bottom has been awesome, you can even catch brown in the middle. We have been finally getting the tires figured out. We got a good shock program and it’s all coming together.”
“This feels great. You always want to win. We have never won here at Fulton, the last couple years we have run here steady. It’s a tough place to get going. We can put another notch on our belt. Sometimes you wonder, but it was a good win for us tonight.”
Bob Bennett grabbed the narrow early advantage over Tom Juhl to start the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature.
With 5 laps showing on the scoring tower, you could throw a blanket over Bennett, Juhl and Dave Emmons as they fought for the lead. On lap 6 Emmons would lead a lap before Bennett inched back in front one lap later.
At the halfway point, lap 10, Bennett held a slight advantage over Tony Finch II, Emmons, Ron Davis III and Juhl as they used every inch of the track.
On lap 15, Davis was able to grab the slight lead with an inside move to get by Bennett to be shown the new leader.
Over the remaining laps it was a four-car shootout for the win. Davis hit his marks as he was able to be the first under the checkers by 0.947 of a second over point leader Jordan Bennett, who came on late for second. Bob Bennett, Tony Finch II and Jim Spano finished third through fifth.
Alan Fink took the lead from Rick Miller on lap 5 of the 20 lap NAPA Late Model feature. Once in the lead, Fink outdistanced a hard charging Sean Beardsley for his second win of the year.
Matt Hulsizer was the class of the field in the 15 lap E&V Energy Novice Sportsman main as he led every lap. Gary Hoppins, Tom Cook, Brian Harber and Dan Keyes chased Hulsizer across the line.
Doug Williams grabbed the top-spot from Lowell Zehr on lap 12, and then went on to win the 15 lap Mod Lite feature. Lowell Zehr, Joe Isabell, Mike Mullen and Rob Grzelka chased Williams across the line.
