When the 2011 racing season started, Gary Tomkins raced with the Ray and Debbie Tuit team, driving the Mike Sparta Trucking 673 entry.  They began the season back in March, taking in RoC Series events at Selinsgrove and New Egypt Speedway, but both ended prematurely, as bad luck seemed to strike, despite having a fast car.

With Ray and Debbie Tuit’s home track being Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York, Gary made the trip each week.  They struggled at the start of the season, posting just two top tens in the first few weeks of the season, but just like the earlier RoC races, they had fast cars, but unable to find any luck.

As the season progressed, Tomkins continued with the 673 team at Orange County, as well as events in the Super DIRTcar Series, and also picked up a ride driving for Duane “Deek” Decker in the infamous “Deuce” car.  Tomkins struggled early in the car, but did manage to pick up a win in August at Brewerton Speedway.

Despite the lack of consistency, Tomkins was in the top 12 in points in the Super DIRTcar Series for the majority of the season, and despite missing a few events while regrouping after an untimely engine failure late in the season, Tomkins finished out the year 12th in Series points.

Plans for the 2012 season have not yet been finalized, as Gary looks to put together a racing program closer to home.  He is hoping to run weekly at Canandaigua Speedway once again, as well as Brewerton, Cayuga County, Rolling Wheels or other area tracks.  He is actively seeking sponsorship for next year and will be able to produce a clearer image of his plans once sponsorship is in place.  He will still run special select events with the Ray and Debbie Tuit team, beginning with the RoC race at Selinsgrove Speedway in March.

“I really have to thank everyone that helped us out this season, and everyone that offered to give me a ride this year”, says Tomkins.  “First and foremost, Ray and Debbie Tuit for there support all season long, and Deek Decker for the opportunity to drive his car the second half of the year at Brewerton.  Other one off opportunities presented itself in Quebec with Bruno Lepage and Jasmine Léveillé.

Tomkins has won at all levels of the sport, including the 2004 Mr. DIRTcar Modified Champion.  He has 17 Super DIRTcar Series victories, and has won 45 Big Block Modified feature events at Canandaigua Speedway, 12 wins at Cayuga County Speedway, 7 wins at Rolling Wheels Raceway, plus multiple wins in the Sportsman division at each track.  To contact Gary Tomkins, send him an email at gtomkins@rochester.rr.com.
