Going into this weekend, Jon Mills and the Hot Lick Racing had been working on a special paint scheme for Canada Day Weekend. They have been running well as of late, and had hoped to continue that success with a very busy holiday weekend. The weekend consisted of the usual visit to Brockville Speedway on Saturday night, followed by a weekend doubleheader at Cornwall Speedway with a regular 20 lap race planned for Sunday and a 50 lap Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Series race set for the holiday Monday.
Mills arrived at Brockville on Saturday night sitting in the top five in track points for the Sportsman division. He was hoping to continue to post solid finishes and contend for his first career win. However, just after hot laps had been completed, rain began to fall and after a heavy downpour, track officials were forced to cancel the night’s events.
Cornwall Speedway was the destination for the remainder of the long weekend and after struggling to a fifth place finish in his qualifying heat race, Mills returned to the pits for some adjustments to the car before the 20 lap main event. He started from the outside of the second row in the fourth starting spot and maintained that position through the opening five laps. On a lap five restart he gained a position and moved into third place and maintained that spot for the remainder of the race.
“The car really worked good for us tonight”, says Mills after the race. “Hopefully tomorrow will be just as good or better when we race against all the Sportsman tour guys”.
The team returned to the track on Monday and began the night by posting the fifth fastest time in his group in the time trials, earning a fifth place starting spot in his qualifying heat race. Jon moved up quickly and by the end of the race he was in second place, making the redraw of a top 12 starting spot for the 50 lap feature race. Optimism was high after lining up from the inside of row three in the fifth position for the 50 lap main feature. Once the race started, it was soon clear it wasn’t going to be a great night, and getting bounced around and knocked off the track in the opening laps, topped off with a light rain that began to fall on lap seven and a flat tire, Mills parked the car for the remainder of the race.
This coming weekend Jon and the Hot Lick Racing team will return to Brockville Speedway on Saturday night for a 40 lap Ogilvie’s Auto Triple Crown Series race and on to Cornwall Speedway on Sunday night.
