Late Models And Modified Set To Open Hagerstown In Two Weeks

Weather permitting, Hagerstown Speedway is ready to usher in its 60th Anniversary season East Coast opener on Saturday afternoon, February 24th at 1:00 p.m.

Traditionally a Saturday night track throughout the season with the first several weeks opening on Sundays, Hagerstown has made an important change in its schedule this year. ALL shows are scheduled on Saturday with Sunday being used as a back up date for any weather related issues. This will be in effect for only the first four programs on the schedule where modifieds are part of the program.

Along with the late models getting their first start anywhere, the Northeast’s big block modifieds join the program for the Syracuse qualifier with the feature winner gaining a guaranteed starting spot for the divisions mid October event at the one mile Syracuse facility.

Gates will open at 11:00 a.m. with warm-ups to begin at 1:00 p.m. and race time at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Both features will be 35 laps in distance and promoter Frank Plessinger has posted $2,000 to the winner of each event.

Should weather become a factor on Saturday, the Speedway will retry on Sunday, the 25th at the same times.

Reviewing the past five seasons, weather has maintained control all but once. Last year, the program was delayed a week with Frankie Plessinger taking the late model win and Brett Hearn in the modified. In fact, Hearn has laid claim to wins in the past four openers. The opening program was again one week late in 2004 when Gary Stuhler scored the opener. In 2003 and 2005, Mother Nature refused to give in with a four week delay each of those years as Stuhler also was the 2003 winner and Jeremy Miller scored in 2005. In 2002, the program went as scheduled with John Mason posting the late model win and Jamie Mills recording his only Hagerstown triumph.

This will be the first of six visits by the modifieds to Hagerstown during 2007.
