PENN CAN/FIVE MILE STARS SERIES BOASTS STRONG FIELD
Susquehanna, PA… The once popular STAR Series returns to the southern tier in 2007 with an eight race mini series to be held at Penn Can Speedway in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania and Five Mile Point Speedway in Kirkwood, New York. The series will kick off at Penn Can Speedway on Friday April 20th with a fifty lap feature event that is part of the opening night Spring 125. The series will conclude at Five Mile Point on Saturday September 8th with another fifty lap event. Scheduling for the mini series is such that all area race teams should be able to compete in all eight events regardless of their area home track.
Interest has run high at the local off season car shows. Many of the local teams have expressed interest in running the series. Penn Can Champions Brian Weaver of Windsor, New York would love to continue his domination at Penn Can Speedway as he has won the last six track championships. Weaver is also the 2005 champion at Five Mile Point Speedway. Another hot shoe with championships to his name is Five Mile Point champion Mitch Gibbs of Norwich, New York. Gibbs has been the man to beat at Five Mile Point the last few seasons. He also scored his first modified win at Penn Can in 2006.
Another driver to watch is Kunkletown, Pennsylvania sensation Joey Grammes. Grammes has come into his own as one of the top modified drivers in the area. He is coming off one of the most exciting races of his career at Penn Can winning the Race of Champions King of the Can event last September over one of the area’s best field of cars assemble in 2006. Grammes is one of the few drivers to get wins last season at both Penn Can Speedway and Five Mile Point.
Both speedways boast stellar fields of modifieds weekly and that should add up to a great mini series between the two tracks. Perennial runner-up J. R. Crouse of Nazareth, Pennsylvania should be a favorite in this eight race tour. Crouse is a strong runner at Five Mile Point and has indicated he will be in competition weekly at Penn Can for the 2007 season. Also expected to be strong are two of Five Mile Point’s Fifty Greatest Drivers Glen Knapp and Jim Crawn. Knapp has a new car for the 2007 campaign while Crawn will be back behind the wheel of the Tom Coar owned Bicknell modified.
Two talented veteran drivers are expected to return to Penn Can Speedway in 2007 and are expected to compete in the mini series. Jeff Rudalavage from Olyphant, Pennsylvania and Butch Tittle from Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania are two of the best drivers to have competed at Penn Can Speedway over their careers. Both drivers are also past winners at Five Mile Point as well. These two should add to an already strong field of STAR modifieds.
Other strong competitors are expected to race for their share of tour wins. Multi-time Penn Can feature winner Alan Rudalavage has also indicated their team will be ready for the series events as well as a full season at Penn Can Speedway. Young guns Craig Terrell of Windsor, Brian Decker of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, James Cornell of Harpursville, New York, and Mike Gular of Harleyville, Pennsylvania should all be strong along with racing veterans Mike Colsten, Mike Doty, Chris Weaver, Tom McGurren, Carl Nagel, Bill Thornton, Bill Huff, Joel Batzel, and Butch Getz.
Penn Can Speedway is located on Route 171 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania just a short drive from both the Binghamton and Scranton areas. The speedway is sponsored in part for the 2007 season by great corporate partners including Don’s Automotive Mall, Gary’s U-Pull-It, Pump-N-Pantry Stores, Trackside Products, Bernheisel Race Components, Pine Line Auto, American Race Tires, and Sunoco Race Fuels.
