The 2007 Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman Tour will get underway on Sunday, April 15th at Five Mile Point Speedway. The 40 lap event will pay $1,000 to the winner with the back half of the R.o.C Dirt Sportsman purse being increased in 2007. Race time is set for 2 p.m. for the R.o.C Sportsman South Regional opener.
The Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman Tour opener should once again see a strong field of teams competing for the regional and overall titles. A number of the top Sportsman teams have moved up to the Modified division for 2007. This could leave the door wide open for some of the young talent looking to make their mark in the Sportsman division.
Last year Willie Osmun became the eleventh different winner in as many races on the R.o.C Dirt Sportsman Tour by winning the lid lifter at Five Mile Point Speedway. Forty-seven Sportsman were on hand for the event last year and all indicators point to another very competitive opening day field.
In what seems to be a trend in some short track arenas many off-season moves have seen purses being slashed prior to the upcoming racing season. The Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman teams will see this trend upended with a purse increase for the 2007 tour. The winners share at all tour events will remain a $1,000 to win but the back half of the purse will be increased.
The Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman 40 lapper will be just a part of the excitement on Sunday, April 15th. The Modifieds will compete in the 14th running of the Southern Tier Open. That event will pay $3,000 to the winner for only 50 laps of racing on the quarter mile. Sail panels and open tires will be permitted for the Modified portion of the program.
The 2007 Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman Tour officially goes green Sunday, April 15th at Five Mile Point Speedway for the running of the South Region opener. The 40 lapper will pay $1,000 to the winner. For Race of Champions Sportsman Tour information please call the tour offices at (607) 775-5555 or log on to www.rocdirt.com for more.
