Sands Appointed Orange County Fair Speedway Operations Manager

Weedsport, NY — April 2, 2007 — By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing PR Director

DIRTcar Racing officials announced today that Kenny Sands has been named Operations Manager of Orange County Fair Speedway. Sands becomes the fourth member of Orange County ’s steering committee, joining Competition Director George Johnson, Assistant Competition Director Doug Dulgarian and Marketing, Media, Public & Community Relations Director Peter Reynolds.

“Appointing Kenny fills the void of someone able to tend to all of our track needs on a daily basis,” said Johnson, who served in a similar capacity at OCFS since the end of the 2006 season. Johnson will continue to act as Event Director on race nights, assisting Sands in his new role during the early part of the season. “Kenny will be the point man now, the go-to guy, meeting with me every day until he gets acclimated to his new position. He’s originally from right here in Middletown and is already comfortable with the people and his surroundings. He also has a vast amount of knowledge in the field of track operation and he’ll be a great asset to our dedicated staff as 2007 moves forward.”

Sands’ primary assignment will be to oversee day-to-day operations of the speedway, including managing the in-house office staff, ticketing and book keeping, grounds maintenance and scoring procedures. He is looking forward to reacquainting himself with many of the long-time race teams and fans in Middletown while welcoming some new ones to the historic Orange County oval.

“I began working for Will Cagle (former track GM) as a scorer at Orange County in the early 90s so that’s a big help in getting readjusted,” said Sands, 52, who relocated to Florida and began scoring at East Bay Raceway in 1998 when Cagle promoted the track located near Tampa. “When Stanley Kolan took over at East Bay shortly after I became the General Manager for five years. 2006 was one of the best as I’m also a sprint car owner and my driver Daryl Smith won the E-B points title. I’m glad to be back in New York again, especially with Orange County ’s opener just a couple weeks away. And right now, building back up the fan base ranks highest on the agenda.”

While Sands’ office tenure officially began on Monday at the familiar Wisner Avenue site, he already played an active role Saturday on ‘Track Clean Up Day.’ During the past weekend he joined over 80 volunteers that signed up to participate in a general facility restoration project that covered landscaping, cutting brush, cleaning flower beds, repairing fences and seats, and painting.

“We far exceeded our goal of improving the general appearance of the race track,” boasted Sands, who was one of the first to arrive for clean-up duty at 7 a.m. “I can’t thank enough all those that helped out and continued to show their support of such an historic landmark like the Orange County Fairgrounds.”

Season-opening races at Orange County Fair Speedway begin at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 21. 2007 marks the 58th consecutive season of weekly stock car racing at Orange County , one of the oldest automobile race tracks in the country. A full program of DIRTcar Big-Block Modified, 358-Modified, Sportsman, Pro Stock and Pure Stock action highlights opening night activity.
