Bridgeport, NJ…. Now that the “Test & Tune Day” is history at South Jersey’s Bridgeport Speedway, all attention is focused on three consecutive shows that will serve as “Season Openers” in the next two weeks. Practice Day at the speedway saw over 130 racers take to the track to get ready for the upcoming season, with cars from ten different racing divisions getting track time on both the ¼ mile and 5/8th mile clay speedways. All cars were checked for NJ Safety Inspection before they hit the racetrack, and after six hours of practice time, everyone left to get ready for their respective openers.
The 2007 Grand Opening on Saturday April 7 for the 5/8th mile raceway will feature the Big Block Modifieds, which will battle for $3,500 to win in a 30 lap main event, with the 358 Sportsman, GM Sportsman, and Outlaw Stocks competing that evening. This will also be the first racing action for the Class of 2007 Rookie Sportsman, which will be the first event of the night.
The Easter Weekend Special will include many surprises, including a big Easter Egg Hunt for the kids and Best Bunny Costume Contest. Pit gates for this program will open at noon, with the front gates opening at 4PM. Cars will take the track at 5PM for warm-ups, with the first heat of the new season slated for 6PM.
The following Friday night, April 13th, four divisions will take to the ¼ mile track for the season opener. The 600cc Micro Sprints will compete for $500 to win in a 25-lap feature, joined on the card by the 270cc Micro Sprints, the 4 Cylinder Stocks, and the first of four special appearances by the Tobias Slingshots. The Friday night programs all begin at 7PM.
The “Fastest Dirt Track In The East” will come back the next night, Saturday April 14, with the season opener for the United Racing Company Sprints. URC Sprints, with their top and nose wings, are known for some of the fastest lap times ever produced on the big 5/8th mile Bridgeport clay, and their trademark is the exciting wheel to wheel action their talented drivers, led by 2006 Champion Curt Michael in the Palladino #99, produce when they take to the speedway.
The high-flying URC Sprints will compete that night in a complete set of qualifying events, leading up the big 25 lap A-Main for the twenty-four fastest qualifiers. Also on the schedule for the evening show are the Big Block Modifieds, 358 Sportsman, GM Sportsman, and 2007 Rookie Sportsman. Pit gates open that day at 3PM, with the front gates opening one hour later at 4PM and racing action starting at 6PM.
NOTES…2007 is shaping up to be another fun year at the “Port”, with Race Night Special Event Organizers Jay Dugan and Jessica James hard at work putting together programs for the young and old alike that will make every Saturday night a special event on all race fans calendars…Doug Hoffman made his first appearance at Bridgeport in over a year and a half, shaking down the Sal DeBruno Overhead Doors #0, setting the fastest time of the day until second generation driver Richie Pratt Jr. really pushed the Hewlitt #901 to a better time in a later session…Hoffman was overheard in the pits saying it felt good to be back at the track and he can’t wait for opening night, hoping for at least a top five finish, with the wins coming as soon as he shakes off the rust from not driving for awhile. The way he was pushing the “0” big block around the track, it won’t be long! …Curt Michael and Michael Carber, along with Davey Sammons, Mares Stellfox, Joe Zuczek and Robbie Stillwagon were among the URC Sprinters that took to the 5/8th mile for practice on Saturday, getting ready for the opener at Bridgeport in two weeks.
