(Glencoe, AL).The Road to the $350,000 FASTRAK National Championship made its way to the Green Valley Motor Speedway on Saturday for a Southern & Mid-East Region combination Touring event. Considering the unseasonably cold weather, the event may have well been renamed the "Alabama Chiller" as fans and 33 teams from six different states braved the weather, which saw temps drop into the 30s. Track owner Dennis Harker completely remolded the entire facility with new press boxes, clay, lights and many other improvements that were completed at the beautiful 3/8-mile facility.
Super Late Model standout Ray Cook grabbed the headlines with his victory in the 50-lap event. Cook earned $3,000 for his win as he works toward his goal of qualifying for the Grand Nationals later this season. Cook muscled the lead away from pole-sitter Chip Brindle on the opening lap and set sail in his #53.
Meanwhile, Tim Busha caught everyone's attention as he worked his way from the 19th starting spot into contention taking third on lap 17. Busha then ran down second place man John Liewellyn and the two went at it in a spirited battle for 20 laps. Busha tried everything possible to get by Llewellyn including giving him a nudge from time to time, but Llewellyn was able to hold his ground for the runner-up finish.
Chris Ferguson passed Travis Pennington on lap 41 to finish fourth despite erasing a straightaway deficit to Busha in two laps. Travis Pennington dropped to fifth at the finish over his father Jack, who started 18th. Opening Southern Touring Region winner at East Alabama Motor Speedway, William Thomas, finished 13th, while Clay Grogan's three-race win streak at the track ended with a disappointing 22nd place finish.
