Accord, NY - Accord Postpones Practice Until Saturday, April 14th
By Steve Pados
A slow moving but persistent storm has left the grounds at Accord Speedway too wet and sloppy for the scheduled April 13th practice session. The storm, which seemingly stalled at the Accord gates, finally moved out of the area after midnight, but promoter Gary Palmer made the decision to give the speedway and grounds an extra day to recover from the latest area storm that has kept Accord from opening it's gates for the opening practice sessions. The Palmer Family has been working non-stop on the track and are hoping for some cooperation from mother nature to allow all of the racers the opportunity to dial in their racecars for the new season set to begin next week.
Accord Speedway will utilize the raindate of April 14th for the opening practice session. There will be no admission fee to the spectators hoping to get a first hand look at the new equipment set to do battle this year at the speedway. The Gates at the speedway will open at 4:30. On April 20th, the Palmer Family will kick-off their 7th year at the controls of Accord with racing for all divisions, sponsored by TerraNova Four Seasons Pizzeria, and highlighted by a 50-lap Modified feature that will pay $2,000.00 to the winner.
Much interest has centered around the Ulster County bullring during the off-season, as the Modified rules have been opened up to allow Big Blocks and other combination motors to compete as long as they meet the weight break for their specific motor combination. Big Block powered cars must weigh in at 2500 pounds, 2004 DIRT legal 358 cars must weigh 2400 pounds, and all other combinations must weigh 2600 pounds to fit within the new rules. Many new faces are expected to be in the opening night field with the big payout offered to the competition.
In addition to the new indoor seating area and the new VIP Tower, Promoter Gary Palmer has announced plans for a newly designed Winners Circle with higher density lighting and a TV type broadcasting booth for the Winners Circle. Driver interviews from all divisions will greet the fans arriving at the racetrack early. Race night sponsors and VIP guests will be included with the new interview area, as Promoter Gary Palmer seeks to give as much recognition as possible to the drivers, owners and sponsors who support this gem in the Catskills.
Gary Palmer and his family have made continuous improvements to Accord since they purchased the facility in 2000.
From 1962 and heading into 2007, Accord has opened their gates for 45 years. The new season will punctuate the hard work and effort the Palmers have put into the faciltiy, offering the best in dirt short track racing.
