Susquehanna, PA…The long winter wait is now over and the gates of Penn Can Speedway are ready to open for a new season Friday with the annual Spring 125 at the Susquehanna County oval. Interest has been at an all time high for this special three division opener feature the three open wheeled divisions competing at the speedway.
The first of the featured divisions will be the mighty modifieds kicking off the eight race Stars Series. This mini tour will have the best area modified drivers from the southern tier of New York and the northern tier of Pennsylvania competing in extra distance races at both Penn Can Speedway and Five Mile Point Speedway. The tour is open to any modified team wishing to compete. The first race at Penn Can will be over the fifty lap distance. Qualifying heats and the feature will be lined up by luck of the draw in each of the series races. The first series race at Penn Can will pay the winner a handsome $2000.
Many of the top area race teams are expected to be in competition at Penn Can Friday. Multi-time champion Brian Weaver leads the list of top drivers that will be at the speedway for the Spring 125. Local hotshoes Joey Grammes, Alan Rudalavage, Mike Colsten, Mike Gular, Carl Nagel, and a host of Penn Can stars will all be in competition. Five Mile Point veterans, Mitch Gibbs, Jim Crawn, J.R. Crouse, Glenn Knapp, Joel Batzel, and Mike Doty are all expected to run for the STARS Series crown.
The Race of Champions Sportsman Series Southern Tour will make its first start of 2007 at Penn Can April 20th. With Five Mile Point forcing to cancel their April 15th Southern Tier Open, the ROC Sportsman will now kick the season off running a big fifty lap feature paying the winner $1200. Last season over forty sportsman signed in for the opening race at Penn Can. Another strong field of sportsman should be in the pits at Penn Can when the green flag drops for the best sportsman in the area.
Joining the open wheeled warriors will be the IMCA modifieds. This popular division will be competing in four races at Penn Can during the 2007 season. This first race will be a great tune-up. The Empire Series Tour for IMCA modifieds will be in competition at Penn Can Tuesday July 3rd for a huge sanctioned event that is sure to attract the top IMCA drivers in the east.
Gates will open at 5:00 with the first heat race scheduled to take the track at 7:15. For more information about racing at Penn Can Speedway call the track office at 570-585-9928.
