KIRKWOOD, NY…Yes it’s true Five Mile Point Speedway has added a complete racing program this Saturday at 5:30 p.m. In competition will be the Modifieds (30 laps), Sportsman (25 laps), Pure Stocks (25 laps), Lightning Cats and A League of Their Own. The scheduled paid practice will still take place between 1 and 4 p.m. this Saturday prior to the added racing program.
Despite the snow that fell earlier this week Five Mile Point Speedway is ready for racing action this Saturday. The Modifieds will do battle in a 30 lap open competition event. This means that any 92 x13 tire may be run along with sail panels. The Sportsman will compete in a 25 lap event with any 92 x 13 inch tire allowed (no aluminum wheels). The Pure Stocks, Lightning Cats and a League of Their Own will also be in racing competition. Qualifying events will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
The paid open practice will still take place on Saturday. This will be held between 1 and 4 p.m. It is open to divisions racing at Five Mile Point Speedway during the upcoming season. Gates will swing open for practice at 12 noon. Spectators will be admitted free into the grandstand for the practice session as a sneak preview of the racing action.
Five Mile Point Speedway owner Andrew Harpell remarked, “This may seem a bit off-the wall to some but our facility will be ready to go for a full fledged racing program on Saturday.” He added, “We will certainly be watering the speedway on Friday in preparation for the event.” Lastly he stated, “We have a facility that is race ready and our phones have been ringing off the hook from race teams just looking for a place to race. We are providing them that opportunity.”
Despite the recent snow on Monday the speedway surface is ready to go and the remainder of the grounds dried up remarkably on Wednesday. With the speedway tucked in the valley of Kirkwood it received several less inches of snow than many of the nearby hilltops. The facility drainage is very good and in 1995 the speedway received eight inches of snow on the Thursday prior to the Saturday opening day event and it still went off without a hitch. History will repeat itself this Saturday as racing will take place.
Last Saturday the speedway was in fantastic condition for the open practice that was held. There was a buzz around the pits and the times were super quick and surface was the typical multi grooved. The speedway was re graded and packed tight prior to the snow and is ready for racing action.
Pit gates for the paid open practice will swing open at 12 noon. Practice will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The pit gates will reopen at 4:15 p.m. with racing set for 5:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 4:30 p.m. for the racing program.
