Jamaica, VA – It wasn’t easy but Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA finally grab the lead from Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA on lap eleven and then held on to take home his first victory of 2007 in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 35 lap feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, VA.
Shelton , Lipscombe and Roger Jamerson put on a show as they battled in tight quarters for the lead for the entire 35-lap distance. With Shelton in the lead Lipscombe and Jamerson wrestled over the second spot. By lap 23 Shelton held a 4-car length advantage as Jamerson worked the inside of Lipscombe for the runner up spot. The races last caution of the night came out on lap 30 for a spinning Kenny Moreland, who had help from Jack Foulkes in turn 2.
On the restart Shelton caught the field sleeping a bit and got himself a two-car length advantage as Jamerson tried again to take second from Lipscombe. Lipscombe held on to second as Shelton went on to capture his first win in 2007.
“With all the troubles I’ve been having I never thought I would win another race, I have to thank Bret Hamilton he really knows how to set up a race car,” commented Shelton in victory lane.
Rounding out the top five were Davis Lipscombe, Roger Jamerson, Michael Roop and Robert Kramer. Michael Roop of Fredericksburg , VA picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race with his fourth place finish.
In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature Craig Folmar of Phillipsburg , PA set a new track record for the division with a lap of 17.090 seconds. Folmar would invert the top eight cars with the pill draw putting Eric Keck and Daren Bolac on the front row and leading the field to green. Keck was able to hold off Bolac out of turn 2 to lead the first lap.
On lap 2 Folmar took third from Bobby Mazingo and then set out to catch Bolac. It didn’t take long as he began to challenge Bolac for second and on lap 5 dove inside Bolac in turn 3 to take the spot away.
On lap 7 Folmar caught Keck and began his assault for the lead. On the next lap Folmar made his move and passed Keck on the backstretch taking the lead. Once out front Folmar had no challengers for the lead. On lap 9 Mary Anne Williams worked her ride under Bolac in turn 3 to take third. On lap 16 Williams would take second form Keck and set out to catch Folmar would had checked out to another zip code. Folmar never looked back though and took home his second win in as many tries with Williams second and Keck barely holding off Bolac for third.
“I have to thank the staff her at VMS, the track keeps getting better and better every week,” commented Folmar in victory lane.
Rounding out the top five were Mary Anne Williams, Eric Keck, Daren Bolac and Michael Tolley. Bolac picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race with his fourth place finish.
In the Charger 25 lap feature Ryan Toole and Frank Addington led the field to green. Addington gained control from the outside of turn 2 only to have James Givens slide under him out of turn 4 to lead the first lap. On lap 2 Kyle Nelson worked his way to the inside of Givens but couldn’t pull off the pass for the lead. Bob Terry decided to throw his hat into the mix as he worked his way from eighth to make it a three-way battle for the lead.
On lap 3 Terry took third from nelson, on lap 4 Nelson regained the spot. As the top three battled for the lead you could throw a blanket over them. On lap 14 Terry retook second from Nelson as the top three raced nose to tail. On lap 19 Terry almost looped his car in turn 2 trying to take the lead form Givens. That handed second back to Nelson who promptly went to work on Givens for the lead. The races second and final caution of night tightened the field back up and on the restart nelson tried Givens once again for the lead. Givens held on and picked up the victory by less than a half a second over Nelson
Rounding out the top five were Bob Terry, John Kirby and Mark Wright. Kyle Nelson picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race with his second place finish.
In the All American 15 lap feature Brett Adkins and Dave Savage led the field to green. A quick caution would come out for a spinning Ryan Hutchens. On the restart Adkins would gain control and lead the first lap. Marty Coltrain would get to the inside of Adkins in turn 4 and lake the lead on lap 2. Following Coltrain into second was Kevin Fletcher who had set a new track record earlier in the day. The race for the top five was hectic as Coltrain led a pack that included Fletcher, Dustin Owens, Johnny Brooks Jr. and point leader Stephen Childress.
On lap 6 Owens took second from Fletcher out of turn 4. Fletcher did not want to give up the spot that easy as he continued to battle to the outside of Owens. Owens secured the spot and went to work on Coltrain for the top spot. On lap 9 Owens went to the outside of Coltrain only to have Coltrain hold on to the lead.
On lap 11 Fletcher battled side by side with Owens taking over the second spot by inches at the strip. On lap 12 Owens retook the lead out of turn 2. With Fletcher and Owens battling for second Coltrain kept control of the lead and picked up the victory with Fletcher nipping Owens at the line for second. Rounding out the top five were William Dunn and Johnny Brooks Jr.
Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway returns to action this coming Saturday April 28th and will host the first visit of the ASCS 360 Sprint Cars as the sanctions Mid-Atlantic Tour will visit for a 25 lap main event presented by Thurston spring Service, Inc.
The American Sprint Car Series Mid-Atlantic Region is in its inaugural season of sanctioning 360 Sprint Car races consist of 16 points-paying events at tracks in Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia and other neighboring states. The Mid-Atlantic Region event serves as an appetizer for the 360 East Coast Nationals scheduled for May 25 – 26, 2007. Drivers such as three-time ASCS National champion Gary Wright, former World of Outlaws winner Jason Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Travis Rilat, Darren Stewart, Garry Lee Maier are planning to be at VMS in May.
A stout field of cars is expected at the inaugural ASCS Mid-Atlantic Region visit to the speedway. Kenny Adams, a former winner in 360 Sprint Car action at the speedway, and stepson, Bryn Gohn, are planning to make the tow north from Malibar , Fla.
Saturday April 28th will also feature Round one of the Victory lap late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T. The four race series will offer a bonus program for multiple wins. The Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge will once again pay a $5,000 bonus to anyone winning two of the four events with it going to $15,000 if a driver wins three of four events. And finally, if a driver sweeps all four events that driver would pick up a cool $25,000 bonus. Track rules for the Victory Lap Late Model Division will apply.
Also racing will be Budweiser Modified, VMS Chargers and the VMS All Americans divisions. Come experience the raw, pure excitement that is dirt racing!
Competitor gates for Saturday, April 28th will open at 3pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm. On track activities will begin at 6:45pm with hot laps. Divisions scheduled to race on Friday April 28th: ASCS Mid-Atlantic 360 Sprint Cars (25 Laps); Victory Lap Late Models (40 Laps); Budweiser Modifieds (25 Laps); VMS Chargers (25 Laps) and the VMS All Americans (15 Laps). ASCS Sprint 360 Sprint Cars will run a complete sprint car format. Late Model, Modified and Charger divisions will run Hot Lap Time Trials and Features only. All Americans will run Hot Lap Time Trials, Heats and Feature. Adult tickets are just $12, Senior and Military $10, Students 13 –17 yrs old $7, Children 7 – 12 yrs old $4 and Children 6 and under free. The Speedway offers a Family Pack for two adults and two children 12 and under for only $25. Also check the track’s website for discount coupons.
Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, a ½ mile dirt oval track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda , VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock , VA in Jamaica , VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond , Fredericksburg , Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads area.
