ROBINSON, UNDERWOOD, SULSER, YAHNKE TAKE OPENING NIGHT WINS AT BLOOMFIELD

Tony Paris

BLOOMFIELD, Iowa –- The 2007 season opener at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway was held Friday night with a great crowd on hand for the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series.

In the USRA B-Mods, Ottumwa driver Paul Underwood passed Cody Townsend for the win.

In the Hornet division, Ryan Yahnke of Bloomfield passed Gene Irwin of Bloomfield on the fourth lap and led the final six laps for his first ever win. Ryan Moore of Centerville took the second spot with Jimmy Garrett of Ottumwa in third and Matt Moore of Ottumwa in fourth.

The USRA Stock Car feature was a thriller with three- and four-wide racing, along with Chris Leathers of Callao, Mo., trying to exit the racing surface in turn 3 after climbing the fence on lap 3. This brought the field to a stop with the red flag, but Leathers was not hurt in the accident. After racing action resumed, Michael McClure of Bloomfield, Shane Weller of Agency, Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Mike Robinson of Moravia and Jason Cook of Mt. Pleasant all battled for the lead with Robinson working his No. 78r machine into the lead with only three laps remaining in the 15-lap main event. The 2005 USRA Stock Car track champion held on for the win, while VanderBeek took second with McClure in third and Weller taking the fourth spot.

The USRA Hobby Stock feature was won by Jim Sulser of Centerville who raced Todd Reitzler of Grinnell to the finish line. Sulser's margin of victory was less than three inches as he secured his first win in years of racing the No. 11s Mopar machine. Reitzler took a very close second place finish after leading the first 14 laps of the 15-lap main event. Jim Walker of Mystic and Dustin Griffiths battled for the third spot with Walker taking third and Griffiths in fourth.

Next week at the Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway will feature the season debut of the high-powered USRA Late Models battling for a $3,000 top prize, along with the season opener for the USRA Modifieds. Also on the racing card will be the USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks and Hornets. Gates will open at 5 p.m., with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7. Grandstand admission will be $15 for adults and $12 for juniors (ages 12-17) and seniors (age 62 and older). Kids 11 and under get in for FREE. Pit passes will be $25.

Race day info is available by calling the track hotline at 641-664-2500 or online at www.rlpromotions.com/bloomfield. The Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway is located 1.0 mile west of Bloomfield on US 63/SR 2, then 0.8 mile north on CR J40 (at the Davis County Fairgrounds).
