West Lebanon, NY - By the time the dust settled at the Valley of Speed,
there was a new sheriff in town in the Modifieds, and a couple of cagy
veterans took the top spots in the Pro Stocks, and opening night for
the
Sportsman.
Callanan Industries and Contractor Sales, along with the Famed High
Banks at
Lebanon Valley Speedway took full advantage of the weather this past
Saturday, enjoying some 75 degree weather, a far cry from the 30 degree
temps from just one week before.
At the point of the 30 lap Modified main event, it was Brian Berger’s
#60.
But the field struggled to get the show underway. The caution flew
just 1
lap into the event for what appeared to be a dust storm. After the
dust
settled, they tried it again; same result, nearly zero visibility. So
after
a short delay, track officials decided to re-water the inner track
surface
to try and settle track for safety reasons.
And soon the green flag flew; the difference was noticeable, as Berger
drove
his #60 back to the front again over the #87x of Paul Gilardi. The
caution
flew a few more times, but the most notable was on lap 14 when the #35
of
Jeff Sukup spun in turns 1 and 2, but that caused cars to react all the
way
back in turns 3 and 4, as the #34 of Steve Hough, and the #42 of Guy
Sheldon
made contact and spun collecting up the #21j of Jeff Trombley, the #20
of
Matt Quinn, and the #115 of Kenny Tremont. Hough, Sheldon, and Quinn
all
were relegate to the back of the pack, Trombley later broke and
retired,
while Tremont was the only one able to continue with just minor damage.
That set up for a perfect opportunity for the younger Sheldon, driving
the
familiar Sheldon Oil #518, Kyle had settled in behind Berger waiting,
and
learning, but more importantly, ready to pounce on any mistake. And
his
wish finally came true, as Berger bobbled just a little bit in turns 1
and
2, and Kyle Sheldon wasted no time, and drove to the high side around
Berger, and took the top spot on lap 17.
From there, it was just a matter of clicking off the laps. And by lap
30,
the younger Sheldon was driven like a veteran. At the checkers,
Sheldon
takes his 1st career big block victory, followed by Eddie Marshall,
Brian
Berger, John Hewitt, and Andy Bachetti. Hewitt was DQ’d after post
race
inspection revealed a weight infraction. That awarded Bachetti 4th,
and
Tremont 5th.
In victory lane, the elder Sheldon join Kyle for a great father, son
moment.
“Nothing could have prepared me for this. I’m so excited, and so
proud….
I was just not prepared.” Other notables were; JR Heffner finished
8th,
Wayne Jelley 9th, outsider Jimmy Phelps in the Troyer house car #98H
was
10th, and Guy Sheldon finished 15th.
The Sportsman division made their debut for 2007, Saturday night, and
it too
made for a great race. But by lap 4 of the 20 lap event, it was pretty
much
a closed book, as K.C. Goewey wheeled his Want Ad Digest #2 to the
victory
over veteran Art Collins. Kyle Hoffman charged his way to a 3rd place
finish, followed by 2006 Champ Jeff Watson, and Frank Harper’s #25.
Other
notables were; Ed Harkins finished 7th, Kevin Lynch crossed the 9th,
Danny
Sanchez was 10th, and Chris Kokosa struggled to finish 22nd.
The Pro Stocks 20 lap feature event was also dominated by a veteran.
Shortly after the green flag flew, the Ol’ Buzzard put his familiar
#54L out
front, and put on the cruise control. Jimmy Langenback drove to his
first
win of 2007, followed by Kevin Arnold, Robbie Speed, Ed Bachand, and
Chris
Crews. Notables were Jay Casey, Mike Middleton, and Don Carlson
finished a
great battle for 20 laps placing 8th, 9th, and 10th respectively.
Nick Hilt did the double dip, and captured his 2 win in as many races
in the
Limited Pro Stocks.
The Pure Stocks put on a great show as well. In PS#1 Robert Hammell
got
past Tim Seyers and Jery Helms to take the 8 lap victory. PS#2 saw Ed
Hatch
dominate over Randy Myers and Lynn Wesley. PS#3 saw the legendary Pete
Wiegand make another last lap pass (coming out of 4) to take his 2nd of
the
season over Jay Casey, and Al Relyea. And in PS# 4Richard Puff held
off Bob
Palmer and Tom Murphy to take the 8 lap feature.
Next Saturday Night, it’s Madsen Overhead Doors and Boomer’s
Performance
presenting the program at the Valley of Speed, along with a special
Boomer’s
20 Lap Pure Stock Clash. All other divisions will be on tap for
another
night of racing action at the legendary High Banks of Lebanon Valley.
