Kerry Hanson Wins First WISSOTA Late Model Feature
By Bill Nelson
April 21, 2007
Well it finally made it here, good weather that is and the official opening night of Deer Creek Speedway. A mod 70’s day in southern MN in April is a blessing however the 30mph sustained winds all day long played games with the track crew as they tried to get moisture into the speedway. Track stayed smooth and black throughout most of the action which in the springtime is a blessing over a tacky and rough track.
After completion of the heat race action and one “B” feature the 5 classes of cars took to the track for their respective feature races. The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were up first with 30 of them checking into the back gate on this Saturday afternoon. Flyin Bryan Hernandez took early control of the feature until a caution flew for Jim Struckman after tagging the wall in three and four after working through a “B” feature. On the restart Jerry Young pressure Hernandez for the top spot. Greg Pfeifer Jr. was also strong early as he worked low on Young early while sitting in third. Chris Adams used the very bottom of the track to slowly work into the top three while Hernandez flew around the top side of the speedway. With eleven to go Kenny Wytaske moved into a three car battle for third with Adams and Pfeifer and after clearing them moved under Young for second. A caution bunched the field back up with Wytaske, Hernandez and Adams three wide for the lead out of two on the restart. Adams came into turn three with the lead while the other Wytaske, Albert found himself inside the top five and on a mission to the front. Another caution with six to go gave Albert his chance as he quickly moved onto the bumper of Adams on the restart. Chris was too strong on this night as he slowly moved out to a comfortable lead over A. Wytaske in second, Hernandez came home third.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks pulled onto the track for their 18 lap feature next with Scot Nelson and Derek Borchardt pacing the field side by side for the first two circuits with Scott Olson running close behind in third. Chuck Nerland and Tony Horsman ran side by side for the fourth place. Nelson took control for two laps only to have Borchardt pull alongside again. Thirteen to go found Nelson out front alone with Olson moving into second place. Borchardt kept the pressure on with Steve Eischens and Horsman racing for position directly behind him. With nine circuits completed Nelson was cruising up front up to a full straightaway lead. Olson pushed up in four allowing Borchardt and Eischens to cruise by into second and third. Bobby Kilby started rear on the field and was also working his way forward. Nelson cruised home for the win with Borchardt and Olson rounding out the top three.
Ed Sanders led the first lap of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature until his car spun in turn two handing the lead to Jason Gabrielson. On the restart Cole Queensland moved into second as Dustin Nelson worked into the third position. With three laps completed Nelson and Ryan Siegle touched in four but both drivers were able to back out a little and regained control of their cars. Four laps later Gabrielson was a missile cruising up front while Nelson slowly gained on Queensland in second. With seven to go Nelson moved into second while Chris Groth moved up to the top of the track and quickly reeled in the top five. Groth pulled alongside of Siegle for fifth as Josh Bartel moved under Queensland for third. Without much excitement up front as Gabrielson moved out to a full straightaway lead Groth and Bartel went side by side as Queensland and Siegle ran side by side for fifth. Groth took the third spot away with two to go as Siegle moved into fifth. Gabrielson took home the checkers followed by Nelson and Groth.
Kerry Hanson made the trip over from Baldwin WI payoff with a front row starting spot. Alongside of him was rookie Late Model driver Justin Sass who won his heat race earlier in the night in his first night out in the high-powered machine. With four down the first caution flew for a slowing Bob Slater with Hanson leading, Sass second and Jay Ihrke in third. On the restart Ihrke moved into second while Keith Foss and Lance Matthees raced with Sass for third. Exiting turn four with twenty to go the three wide battle saw the cars touch sending Sass spinning into the infield. On the restart fifteenth place starting Brad Waits moved into the top five. Another quick caution saw Hanson lead with Foss moving into second followed by Ihrke and Matthees. Waits moved into fourth on the restart as Nick Herrick worked on Matthees for fifth. Foss was putting heavy pressure on Hanson up front as the field held mostly single file with fifteen to go. Hanson and Foss touched slightly exiting turn four on their way to the white flag but everyone continued forward with Hanson crossing the checkers first, Foss second and Ihrke third.
Defending Track champion Mike Sorensen picked right up where he left last year. Sorensen drew the front row and jumped out into the elad followed by rookie driver Tyler Rubin. Steve Wetzstein quickly moved into third on a quick restart and set sail for Rubin in the second spot. Wetzstein cleared Rubin three laps later. Another restart saw Bob Timm and Josh Reich racing side by side for fourth with twenty to go. Timm gained control of the position two laps later and started to close ground on Wetzstein. With ten to go the leader started to work lapped traffic while Timm and Wetzstein race nose to tail. Reich moved past Rubin with seven to go but the rest of the field stayed in order to the finish with Sorensen winning, Wetzstein second and Timm third.
Racing action resumes next Saturday night at the southern mn speedplant with racing starting at 5:00, driver cutoff is 4:30. A special thanks to the event sponsor LR-Realty of Grand Meadow.
