2007 Season set to open this Saturday for Genesee Speedway.
Batavia, NY—April 24, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
This Saturday will write another page in the history book of Genesee Speedway as they are set to open the 2007 racing season. Lauterborn Electric presents opening night with all five classes in action along with a driver meet and greet with returning champions from last season.
Jason Hull is returning to defend his title this season in the Dickinson’s Auto Service Mini Stock Division, but seemed to have some pretty tough competition at the second practice in Bobby Dickinson and Mark Forsha.
Jeff Maxwell is also returning to defend his title in the Bobcat of Buffalo Street Stocks in 2007 and was one of the fastest street stocks at the practice. However “Wild”Bill Weller was really picking up the pace in the later portions of the practice. Newcomer Jeb Walworth looked a little shaky at the first practice, but looked a little more comfortable in the car at the second practice.
This season will see a new Pro Stock champion as it has been rumored that Mike Williams will not be returning to competition in the Greenlief’s Restaurant Pro Stock Division. With Williams out, this opens the door for racers like Eric Greenlief, Don Barnes, Steve Miller and Scott Gribben who all looked hooked up at the practice day.
The Troyer Race Cars Sportsman Division is a question mark. Defending champion Brian Sage never lapped a car at either of the practices. Sage may have his work cut out for him this season if he returns to the sportsman ranks. Rob Pratt and Rob Richmond Jr, were the two fastest sportsman’s at the second practice. Ricky Newton Jr, Steve Schumacher, Greg Mrzywka and Steve Miller all looked impressive at both practice dates as they are all in the hunt to be the 2007 champion.
The BDK Construction 360 Late Model Division may vary well be the biggest class at Genesee Speedway this season. At both practice dates the 360 Late Model class had the most support from the teams and with names like returning champion Jim Johnson, Brian Kotarski, Jon Rivers, Justin Chaddock, Bob Babbitt and the Magavero’s to name a few this class is sure to be exciting. Newcomer Jesse Qutermous looked like he had been wheeling a 360 Late Model for years and will make a fine addition to the class along with former Street Stock Champion and newcomer to 360 Late Models Jeff Bridge.
Back by popular demand, Clor’s Chicken Barbeque will return on opening night. Dinners will go on sale at 5:30pm.
Be sure to pick up the newly designed souvenir program that will be on sale around the speedway. Complete with photos, race recap, weekly column, drivers rosters and points.
Pit Gates open at 4pm, Grandstand gates open at 5pm and racing gets under way at 6pm.
