KIRKWOOD, NY…The pre-season is over and the official 57th season opener is set for this Saturday at Five Mile Point Speedway. The point chase will begin in all classes with this year’s opener serving as an even bigger event than years past. This year the Modified teams will kick of the new STAR (Southern Tier Auto Racing) Series with a 50 lap special event paying $1,500 to win. Race time is 5 p.m.
The new STAR Series consists of eight Modified races between Five Mile Point Speedway and Penn Can Speedway. Each speedway is slated to host four events each with a combined point fund being established between the two speedways. The STAR Series championship will be decided over back to back days on Friday, September 7th at Penn Can Speedway and on Saturday, September 8th at Five Mile Point Speedway. Other series dates are: Five Mile Point Speedway (Sat. 4/28, Wed. 6/13, Sat. 6/30) Penn Can Speedway (Fri. 5/18, Mon. 5/27, Tues. 7/3).
All of the areas top Modified drivers will be challenging for the STAR Series title. All eight of the events will see extra distance events paying an increased purse. The STAR Series will determine who is the top Southern Tier Modified driver in 2007. The Modifieds will be competing with sail panels at all eight events. The teams can run any American Racer tire at all eight events on the front and must run the participating speedway compound tires on the rear.
Also on the card this Saturday night will be the Sportsman, IMCA Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Lightning Cats and a League of Their Own. Standard points will begin in all classes on Saturday night. The Modifieds will be competing for 25 track show up points in addition to their STAR Series points.
