The Federated Auto Parts Wayne County Speedway suffered a fire during the feature races on April 11. Apple Creek Fire Chief Les Durstine said the fire either started in the deep fryer or in the range hood or vent pipe. Thankfully, nobody was injured.
The fire destroyed the building which held the concession stand and pit gate office, and damaged the track's electrical system. Damage was estimated at $100,000.
The track will be closed for at least two weeks, and the World of Outlaws Late Model race scheduled for May 5 have been cancelled. Also cancelled is the date for may 4 at Raceway 7, due to travel problems. They will not be rescheduled, but they are already set for the same weekend next year.
After being rained out for two weeks, this was the track's opener. Things were running smoothly with the first features rolling off at 7:30. They had a full field of super late models and outlaw sprint cars, along with the modifieds, pure stocks, and mini stocks.
But they'll be down a few more weeks. And we'll have to wait another year for what is a really exciting event every year. |
