KEVIN WELSH WINS URC THRILLER SATURDAY NIGHT AT NEW EGYPT SPEEDWAY
NEW EGYPT, NJ . . . . . Kevin Welsh of Far Hills, NJ was the best of a twenty-nine car field when the URC Bar's Leaks Sprint Series made their first visit of the season at the New Egypt Speedway. Welsh collected a cool $2,000 for the win, but only after a long fought battle with Brook Weibley and J.J. Grasso early in the race. In the final stages of the twenty-five lap Fred's Trailer Parts Center New Series main event, Welsh had to contend with a fast closing Trevor Lewis. At the drop of the checker, Welsh took the win, his first of the season and thirteenth career victory with URC.
Three heat race events were presented with Brook Weibley, Curt Michael and Michael Carber taking the victories as rookie stand out Andy Hannula scored his first qualifying win with URC in just his third career start.
In the URC feature event, Brook Weibley was the leader at the drop of the green flag with J.J. Grasso in the chase followed by Kevin Welsh and Davey Sammons. Weibley set the pace until lap seven with Grasso took the high line and the lead. Weibley followed in second with Sammons third and Welsh fourth.
What could have been the race of a lifetime for Grasso, came to an end on lap ten when mechanical problems brought the leader to a stop on the backstretch. When green flag racing resumed, Weibley was again the pace setter with Welsh in second and Trevor Lewis now in third. As the laps ticked by, Welsh moved closer to Weibley setting up a challenge for the lead.
At the halfway point of the race, Weibley was still on top followed by Welsh, Lewis, Mr. Consistency Ed Aikin and Michael Carber. Just one lap later, Welsh made the pass to take the lead, dropping Weibley to second.
Randy West, driving the Elmer Stoltzfus #00 brought out the second caution of the night when he came to a stop in turn two. On the restart, Welsh was fast to pull away from the pack, as runner-up Brook Weibley, was now contending with Trevor Lewis in a battle for second.
With five laps remaining, Welsh was the leader with Lewis second followed by Weibley, Aikin and Carber. As the five lap countdown continued, Lewis was moving closer to the leader and the crowd could tell at this point, that a last lap lead change was possible.
With just two laps remaining, Welsh had a three car length lead and Lewis moved to the high side of the speedway. Welsh held the lead with the white flag waiving although Lewis was charging like a freight-train. Lewis moved to within one car length of Welsh, but fell slightly short to challenge for the lead. Welsh took the checker flag for his first win of the season to become URC's third different feature winner of 2007.
Welsh took the win over Trevor Lewis, Brook Weibley, Ed Aikin and Michael Carber. Making up the top ten were Mark Bitner, Chris Coyle, Justin Collett, Curt Michael and Josh Weller.
