Weedsport, NY – April 29, 2007 – By Gary M. Spaid, Cayuga County Fair Speedway PR

Some 110 race teams made their way to the fast 3/8-mile Cayuga County Fair Speedway for the second night of Sunday racing. Danny Johnson came from the 15th starting spot to take the DIRTcar Modified 35-lap feature win for the second week in a row.

“I was surprised we could come from that far back this early in the season and get the win,” stated a happy Johnson from victory lane. “It comes down to the crew giving me a great car tonight.” It was Johnson’s 59th career win at the speedway.

Jeremy Pitcher scored his second straight top-five finish in the DIRTcar Sportsman ranks, only this time it was a win in the 25-lap feature. Young newcomer Jesse Pontello, from St. Catherines, Ontario took the win in the 12-lap Sportsman B-Main.

In full-fender action it was Dave Mannise cruising to the 15-lap Ferris Mowers Street Stock feature victory. For the first time Mannise took home $200 for the win, as DIRT NE officials announced an increase in the weekly purse, to take full effect in two weeks at the track.

Bill Werner notched the win in the 4-Cylinder Enduro class 25-lap feature. It was his first win of the year. A special CNY Mini-Sprint program also took place with Don Harvey Jr., from Milford, NY, earning the 20-lap feature win. A complete race report can be found elsewhere.

The 35-lap DIRTcar Modified main started with Ryan Bartlett grabbing the lead from the outside pole. Bartlett was able to stretch out a 3.2 second lead over Big-Block rookie Robbie Bellinger, Derrick Podsiadlo and Tom Juhl.

By lap eight it was Danny Johnson entering the top-five and using the outside grove that had the fans on edge. Johnson slid by Bellinger down the backstretch on lap 12 and started to close the comfort gap Bartlett had built for himself. It took Johnson just five more circuits to catch and pass Bartlett for the lead.

Johnson was now pulling away from the field, lapping cars at will. Jimmy Phelps, who had finished second last week, worked his way into the runner-up slot this week on lap 24. Phelps tired to close the gap but fell short at the finish line. Bartlett, Joe Beyea and Vince Vitale completed a Troyer chassis sweep of the top-five. The race went non-stop green-to-checkers with an average speed of 69.796 mph.

In the 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman feature it looked to be a “Hile Sweep” as Chris Hile jumped in front of his brother Rob at the start of the race. The yellow flew after just one lap had been recorded in the record books when three separate incidents took place. Mike Entwistle made contact with the back stretch inside wall, Mike Mahaney and Kevin Ridley spun in the first turn and made contact, and finally Todd Town looped in the fourth turn.

On lap four the yellow flew a second time when Anthony Steiner slowed on the main straight. Up front it was still the Hiles running one-two. During this yellow Jeremy Pitcher slammed into the rear of the James Spano machine and immediately returned to his running position. This contact would be discussed in victory lane.

On lap 12 the yellow flew for a third time when Mike Mahaney looped out in the second turn. Two laps later rookie Darrin Austin charged just a little bit too hard into the first turn, landing his car atop of the concrete wall. The car dropped back on the track and was towed to the pits.

On the restart, Pitcher, who had worked his way into the top-five, was able to maneuver his mount into second and break up the Hile-Hile domination of the front spots for the first time. One lap later, using the high side, Pitcher drove his way into the lead again using the high line exiting the fourth turn and was able to cruise home with the win followed by Chris and Rob Hile. Tim Currier was the first crate powered car across the finish line in fourth and Joe Williams rounded out the top-five.

Nick Rizzo took the early lead in the 15-lap Ferris Mowers Street Stock main. Only one yellow slowed the race, that coming on lap five when Glenn Weaver spun out in the second turn. This yellow would prove to be the turning point of the race. On the restart Dave Mannise took the lead from Rizzo and sailed home with the victory. Rizzo, Adam DePuy, Jim Wallace and last week’s winner Dave Marcuccilli rounded out the first five.

This Sunday the Cayuga County Fair Speedway will be dark to make way for a special event at nearby Rolling Wheels Raceway, which will be hosting the 27th DIRT Challenge Cup. This year the Big-Block Modified race will be 60 laps in length. Also on the race card at Rolling Wheels will be the ASCA Patriot Sprint Cars, a Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock Championship event plus a special appearance by the Mod-Lites. Race time at Rolling Wheels is 5 p.m. sharp. Pit Gates will open at 2 p.m., with the main grandstands opening at 3 o’clock

Rolling Wheels Raceway is located just 5 minutes south of Weedsport, NY on Route 5 east of the city of Auburn, NY. This five-eighths mile banked oval is best known on the DIRTcar NorthEast circuit as the “Fast Track”.
