Zemken and Sowle Take Glen Ridge Modified Honors

Posted by Tom Ames  |  04/30/07

Fultonville, NY: Ray Zemken and JaMike Sowle shared the spotlight Sunday evening by claiming the twin 20 lap Modified features. The first event was the held over 40 lap feature that was dusted out a week ago. The second was the regularly scheduled feature.

Zemken and Craig Hanson led the field to the start of the held over feature event. Zemken quickly jumped out front, opening a good sized lead. Zemken put his 358 power down to the tacky surface and held off Hanson for the win. Cass Bennett came home third with Dan Fassett and JaMike Sowle completing the top five.

Sowle and Erik Nelson led the field to the start of the regular feature. Sowle quickly jumped out front, pulling away from Nelson. The race would go green until lap 16 when a cone was kicked out onto the track, forcing officials to throw the caution.

When racing resumed it was all Sowle as no one had anything for the teenager from Glen. Ironically, the racing program was entitled the Town Of Glen Day. Nelson came home second, Hanson third, Floyd Billington fourth and Zemken fifth.

“I threw it in the corners and held it - hoping no one was there” stated an excited Sowle after his first Modified feature win. Heat races were won by Nelson and Sowle.

Butchie Irwin won the 25 lap Budget Sportsman feature event. Rookie Shaun Pangman and Phil Recchio led the field to starter Dan Kingsley’s green with Recchio leading lap one. Recchio would lead until tangling with a lapped car on lap nine. The ensuing restart would see a big wreck involving four cars. Getting the worst was Joey Duncan. Duncan, of Berne flipped his machine wrecking the car and ending his night. He was not injured.

The gave the lead to Irwin who proceeded to pull away, winning the feature easily. Recchio battled back for second with Pangman third, Mike Mason fourth and Jim Nagle fifth. “I want to thank my pit crew and owners” Irwin said. “We also wanted to thank all of our sponsors - without them none of this would be possible”. Pangman and Recchio won the heat races.

Dave Horning Sr. took the checkers in the 25 lap Street Stock feature. Horning took the lead from Brian Cosselman on lap three and held off his fellow Bleecker resident for the win. Cosselman came home second with Don Warner third, Mike Wilber fourth and Darrell Older fifth. Cosselman won the hear race.

Bruce Liddle made it two straight wins in the Cruiser division. Liddle took the lead on a lap four restart and never looked back. Jamie Warner came home second with Josh Gordon third, Bobby Rhinehart fourth and James Walter fifth. Gordon and Liddle won the heat races.

The new Stock Truck division made its debut. Taking the win was Michael Marsicano.

Next week the Glen Ridge Motorsports Park returns to action with the annual Bob Van Aernam Memorial 40 lap event for Street Stocks. This will also be the first round of the NAPA Triple Crown Series for Street Stocks. The Modifieds, Budget Sportsman, Cruisers and Slingshots will all be on the card. Gates open at 2 pm with racing at 5 pm.
