BREWERTON, NY – After waiting more than two weeks because of Mother Nature, Brewerton Speedway finally got the underway on Friday night with Jimmy Phelps claiming the first 35-lap Modified feature event of the 2007 season.
“The car was awesome,” stated Phelps in victory lane. “We came to the track with a plan of attack for tonight. We ended up changing a few things on the car and it worked out perfectly.”
Phelps started alongside Bridgeport, N.Y. native, Steve Hulsizer, on the front row with Hulsizer gaining the advantage at the drop of Glen O’Laoghlin’s initial green flag.
Hulsizer paced the field early with Phelps taking away the race lead on the high-side of the speedway on lap 8.
Phelps held the top spot until Robbie Vormwald brought a caution when he spun in turn four on lap 15. On the restart, Hulsizer jumped to the outside of turn four to beat Phelps to the top spot.
Phelps pursued on the inside and ultimately regained the race lead before another lap was scored.
“Steve (Hulsizer) showed me the quick way around on that restart,” laughed Phelps. “I was being too cautious and he got me. After that I changed my line a little bit and drove the car into the corner without getting it too sideways and I was able to drive back by him on the bottom.”
Once out in front, Phelps pulled away to claim the victory in the Finger Lakes powered Troyer.
Hulsizer settled for second with his no. 88 after starting the event from the pole position.
“That was a great race we had going out there,” said Hulsizer with a smile. “I had a ton of fun driving it and it must have been a lot of fun for the fans to watch.”
Hulisizer, who utilized Kevlar power in his Troyer ride, had several opportunities to race back by Phelps if he had switched lanes but he remained consistent running the high-side of the speedway.
“I didn’t want to dive down into him and make contact,” stated Hulsizer. “We raced side-by-side for the lead and I wasn’t going to chop him and force him to get on the brakes.”
The most impressive run of the evening may have been by third place finisher Kevin Bates. Bates, out of Lake Ariel, Pa., started 14th and finished third with his Murray powered Bicknell.
“That finish was a lot better than I expected,” said Bates. “The car was terrible early on but I was able to run consistent lines the entire race and we were lucky to get a good finish out of it.”
Willy Decker of Vernon, N.Y. was fourth while Scott Prentice completed the top five.
In other action, Pete Anderson won his first career feature IMCA Modified feature; Dan Williams won the 20-lap ESDCA Mod Lite feature; 2006 4-Cylinder Super Stock Champion, Chuck Powelczyk won their 15 lap feature while Josh Herbert won the 20-lap Enduro.

Heat races were won by Hulsizer, Phelps, and Kenny Stafford.
Stafford’s night was ended early when he made hard contact with the large tires on the inside of the back straightaway causing damage to his Troyer mount.
Alan Johnson piloted a Wallace Stacey owned no. 14j to a sixth place finish.
