Weedsport, NY – May 10, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, Cayuga County Fair Speedway PR Director
Four cylinder “Enduro” cars have been a part of the Sunday stock car racing show at Cayuga County Fair Speedway since the early 1990s. Starting this weekend, the division formerly known as Enduros, will now be officially recognized as BattleKarz as the 2007 race season continues at DIRTcar Racing NorthEast’s flagship track.
“We’re looking forward to giving this exciting full-fender class its own identity,” said Cayuga County General Manager Jack Deery. “It certainly deserves more name recognition with its growth in popularity, from just a couple races a year to a full season’s worth and points offered to crown our first track champion last year. Let the BattleKarz begin!”
A contest to name the Enduro type class began in March and coffee table discussions uncovered the likes of such monikers as Pro 4's, Bandits and Road Runners. Mike Ellena of Syracuse created the BattleKarz moniker. Ellena will receive a 2007 season pass to Cayuga County Fair Speedway for his winning name.
“Getting a new name is a great idea with the class developing such a good following the past few years,” said Auburn, N.Y. racer Andy Burtless, 32, who has missed less than a handful of BattleKarz events at Cayuga County during the past five seasons. Burtless is employed as a parts manager at Fox Honda in his hometown and has returned steering his blue no. 85 Honda Prelude, hoping to improve on fourth-place in the final ’06 point standings with a win and five top-5 finishes to his credit. “This class has definitely evolved beyond the type of car that people traditionally associate with ‘County Fair’ racing. I’m sure that tagging on a real cool name will generate a lot more interest. Kids just love this class with all the non-stop action and we probably have 10-15 guys that have become regulars every week.”
Entitled the ‘Make-Up For May 188,’ the first big championship event for BattleKarz arrives Friday, May 18 beginning at 7 pm. The event was initially set back by rain and for a second time when cold temperatures and snow flurries filled the air. A winner’s share of $1,000 has been posted with $300 saved for second and $200 for the show position.
