Johnson and Stefanski go two for two while Venuto, Spicola and Hixenbaugh pick up firsts of season.
Batavia, NY—May 12, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
Jim Johnson and Pete Stefanski picked up back to back wins in their respective divisions at Genesee Speedway while John Venuto, Joey Spicola and Ken Hixenbaugh pick up season firsts.
The Troyer Race Cars Sportsman division feature went caution free for the twenty (20) lap feature with John Venuto making the trip to victory lane by dominating the event. The race started out with Kerry Ball handing his 6T4 sportsman over to teammate R.J. Kingdollar as Kingdollar’s mount suffered damage in the heat race. Venuto paced the field to the green and took the lead right away with Justin Wright in tow. Wright would try to make the high side work and pass Venuto for a couple laps, but could not complete the pass as Venuto could get the run coming off the corners. A hard charging Steve Schumacher put the move on Rob Richmond on lap 6 for 4th spot and set his sights on John Baker. While Schumacher was reeling in Baker, Rob Pratt and Ricky Newton Jr. had the best battle on the track as Pratt was trying to put the moves on Newton. Finally, on lap 8 Pratt would complete the move for 6th and three laps later was working on Richmond for 5th but would not advance the position. Schumacher who was the fastest car in the later stages would move to 3rd on lap 16 as he passed Baker. At the line Venuto would collect the win followed by Wright, Schumacher, Baker and Richmond. Heat wins went to Steve Schumacher, Ricky Newton Jr. and Greg Mrzywka.
The BDK Construction 360 Late Models would not be as lucky at the Sportsman Class as the twenty (20) lap event was marred by four caution periods. Bob Babbitt and JJ Mazur would pace the field to the green and exhibited an awesome drag race down the backstretch with Babbitt coming out on top at the line on lap 1. Mazur and Dave DuBois would then contend for the 2nd place position with DuBois completing the pass on lap 5 and set out for Babbitt. Mazur would continue to fall off as Jon Rivers drove by him taking over the 3rd spot before the caution fell on the speedway for T.J. Newton spinning in turn 1. On the restart DuBois would take the lead from Babbitt before the caution fell again for Josh Pangrazio. When racing resumed Dubois, Babbitt and Rivers displayed a great 3 wide battle for the top spot with Dubois finally pulling away. Rivers dropped one spot as Jim Johnson started to make his march to the front. Three laps later Johnson was contending for the lead and took the point from DuBois on lap 13. The final caution would fly on lap 15 when Tim Barnard spun in turn 3 collecting Jesse Qutermous, Justin Chaddock, Carl Shetler, Brian Kotarski and Rich Mogavero. On the restart Rivers would move to 2nd, but had no chance in catching Johnson. Jeff Bridge was able to work his way under Babbitt for 4th on the final lap. However, Bridge’s car developed a massive push nearly taking himself and Babbitt out of the race. Babbitt would recover and hold his position, but Don Newton and Mazur would work there way past Bridge before the line. Johnson would cross the line 1st followed by Rivers who was later docked two positions for jumping the restart. Rivers would be followed by DuBois, Babbitt and Don Newton. The heat wins went to Bill Holmes, Jon Rivers and Jim Johnson.
The Greenlief’s Restaurant Pro-Stocks seen another repeat winner as Pete Stefanski cruised to another feature win. Mike Townsend and Dave Gagner would set the pace for the twenty (20) lapper. Townsend instantly fell off pace and Gagner jumped to the early lead with Don Barnes battling with him as they were side by side at the line on lap 1. Barnes would come out on top as Steve Lewis and Gagner would compete for 2nd place. By lap 4, Stefanski who started tail after his car quit in the heat race had worked his way up to 4th and was quickly closing in on Eric Greenlief who was holding 3rd spot. Greenlief would move to 2nd when Lewis gave up the spot when he scraped the wall on the front stretch. Greenlief would apply pressure to Barnes with hopes of taking over the top spot, but Stefanski would drive by Greenlief for 2nd on lap 13 and take the lead from Barnes on lap 16. The speedway would go yellow on lap 17 for debris on the front stretch. Stefanski would hold his position on the restart and would complete his march from the back to score his second Genesee Speedway feature win of 2007. Stefanski would be followed by Greenlief, Barnes, Gagner and Butch Zimmerman.
Again, the Bobcat of Buffalo Street Stock division would be filled with controversy. Last week seen Jeff Maxwell suspended for one week of competition and Jeb Walworth placed on probation for an incident on the track. This week saw two top five cars disqualified for illegal parts with the winner of the event being one of the disqualified cars. ‘Fast’ Frank Moyer would take the early lead from his 4th place starting spot. Colton Chappius was moving through the field as he would take over the 3rd position from Kevin Doktor before the caution would fly for Walworth as he lost his right rear axle and wheel. Chappius would take the lead on the restart before the yellow would fly again. ‘Wild’ Bill Weller was on a mission trying to repeat his previous weeks performance and seemed that he was going to get the job done before he broke an axle and spun in turn 3 bringing out the caution. Chappius would go pit side with a right rear flat. His crew did a remarkable job and Chappius returned to the speedway before the green flag would fly. Darrel Moyer had moved to the 2nd position following Frank Moyer, but was very short lived as he broke on the restart and pulled into the pits. Joey Spicola would inherit the 2nd position due to Darrel Moyer’s misfortune. Chappius returned to the lead pack by passing John Fry for the 3rd position following Spicola and Frank Moyer to the line on the final lap. On the cool down lap it was found that Fry had a right rear going down. Frank Moyer would make his 1st visit to victory lane this season but would later be disqualified along with Colton Chappius for rule infractions handing the win to Joey Spicola. Heat wins went to Joey Spicola and Kevin Doktor.
In the Dickinson’s Auto Service Mini Stocks, if you started in the top three you finished where you started. Hixenbaugh took the lead on lap 1 and would never relinquish the lead. Russ Wassner would mount a challenge on lap 4 but Hixenbaugh wasn’t having it and slammed the door and checked out. The previous weeks winner Nick Skeet had worked his way up to 5th before spinning in turn 4 on lap 6. Skeet would go tail but would work his way back up to the 4th position when he passed Jason Hull on the final lap. Hixenbaugh would take the checkers followed by Wassner, Dickinson, Skeet and Hull. Heat wins went to Bobby Dickinson and Russ Wassner.
Be sure to join us next week when Genesee Speedway presents The 5 Star Program along with Ladies Mini Stock race. Pit Gates open at 4pm, Grandstand opens at 5pm, Green Flag drops at 6pm.
