Accord, New York - Yannone Cashes in for $1500 on Provident Bank Night Victory
by Steve Pados
Modified Rookie Jamie Yannone from Newburgh, New York, took advantage of a front row starting spot to wire the star-studded Rhinebeck Ford Modified field in a very popular victory for the young driver. Yannone has successfully made the transition into the Modified division this year after co-sharing the Sportsman title last year with Middletown's Danny Creeden, who also shared in the winner's spotlight last night as he triumphed in the Campers Barn Sportsman feature event.
Yannone, who also won his heat event, led the impressive Modified field down for the start of the main event and quickly distanced himself from the rest of the field. While Yannone was building a sizable margin with each passing lap, the infighting within the pack had the large enthusiastic crowd on their feet throughout the running of the event. A fourteenth lap caution for the spinning Mike Ricci, bunched the pack together for the restart, but Yannone was more than up to the task as he once again powered away, but this time bringing the Orange Energy racer of Scott Ferrier and the Jerry Higbie Mid-City Transit car along with him as the three cars battled the remainder of the way. Yannone came away with his first win in the Modified division, an impressive turnaround for him, as he failed to make the starting field in the lid-lifter a week ago, suffering from a variety of minor mechanical problems.
Ferrier did an outstanding job with his second place finish and Higbie was spectacular, using all of the multi grooved facility to the best of his ability in his march to the front with his big block ride. Higbie finished third and Tom Hindley rode into an impressive fourth from his eleventh starting spot. The veteran Barry Davis rounded out the top five.
Creeden, who also won his heat event, began the Sportsman feature from fourth starting place. Ray See Jr was the early leader, but on lap eight Creeden made the winning pass. Justin Holland from White Lake, New York, was now the man on the move as he too used the tacky Accord surface to his advantage as he moved into second and then began to close the distance between he and Creeden with each passing lap. A last lap bid for the lead fell short as Creeden scored his first victory of the season. Holland was a close second with Ray See Jr third, Steve Krom in a great drive was fourth, and Danny Tyler rounding out the top five.
In a very hotly contested Amsoil Pro Stock feature event, George Christiana led the first twelve laps with constant pressure being applied by first Norbert Bracklow, and then both Adam Douglas and Don Williams. Douglas gained the lead on lap sixteen and then held off a late charge by last week's winner Rob Rowe to pass under starter Kenny Marshall's checkered flag for the win. Rowe was second with Williams, Bracklow, and early leader Christiana rounding out the top five.
Don J Williams crossed the finish line first in the Bryant's Towing Pure Stock feature event, but a post race infraction at the scales resulted in a DQ from the event handing the win over to Joe Judge. Jason Chevalier wound up second with James DeCicco II, Ryan Coon, and Gary Ronk completing the top five.
Mid-Week Madness graduate Danny Cross lead the first two laps of the Heart Chevrolet Spec Sportsman feature event before giving way to eventual winner Eddie Burgess, who led the remaining thirteen laps to score the victory. Hawley Smith was a close second with Jeremy Quick, Greg Hastie, and Jamie House completing the top five running order at the finish.
Clint Roehrs brought his Apple Greens sponsored Mini Sprint from 10 starting place to win the hotly contested Kingston Nissan Mini Sprint twenty lap feature event.
West Milford, New Jersey talent Ralph Utter Jr charged from eighth staring position to the lead in just four laps and immediately opened up a comfortable lead on the twenty one car starting field. On lap ten, Utter had a left front tire go flat and as he tried to hang on, Roehers, the defending Champion from a year ago, siezed the opportunity and took over the lead for good with a thirteenth lap pass. Roehrs won going away to record his first win of the season. Utter did a great job holding on for second with the hard charging John Lodini third, Tim Durland fourth, and Todd Lapp completing the top five.
Dan Curry won the four cylinder event with Ken Hollebeck, Bert Long, Matt Curry, and Sasha Rumsey following.
MUDPLUGS:
In his Winner's Circle interview, Yannone gave thanks to his family for their strong support along with his sponsors, Alex's Marine and Ruggerio Plumbing and Heating.
Rookie Modified campaigner Mike Sabia has signed on Fast Track Steel Erectors, Valley Auto & Machine, and Bunny's Massage to go along with Sabia Excavating for his efforts at the Speedway this year. Sportsman campaigner Steve Krom did likewise as he signed on AMI Services, Windustrial and Country Chevrolet to go along with Armistead Mechanical to serve his racing efforts this year.
Promoter Gary Palmer had the quarter mile facility in great shape for the evening's racing as the track provided a tacky surface and multi racing grooves throughout the evening.
Donnie Elliott looked real strong in winning his heat and scoring a sixth in the Modified main event. Paul Minton returned with a new race car this week, as the car he damaged last week in a front stretch altercation could not be repaired.
Loralyn Brinster, the young lady who won the Miss Middletown Motorsports contest in March, will also serve as Miss Accord Speedway for the 2007 racing season.
