Chamberlain and Henry Notch Victories

Once a year the ALMS Late Models take to the high-banks of Limaland Motorsports Park. This year's edition took place on a lightning fast track in perfect weather conditions. Duane Chamberlain scored his first 2007 ALMS victory in dramatic fashion. The Professional Computer Company Modifieds had a first time winner as Jon Henry led wire to wire and collected his first career win at Limaland Motorsports Park. The Bud Thunderstock feature was a play day for Kevin Gossard as he was clearly the dominant car for all 15 laps.

The evening's heat races were very crucial for the ALMS Late Model drivers since there would not be a B-Main. Chamberlain, Rick Combs, and Jason Montgomery took the top honors. Modified heat wins went to Doug Adkins, Terry Hull, and Todd Sherman. The Bud Thunderstock heat race victors were Jason Jimison, Barney Craig, and Tim Rostorfer.

The ALMS feature had Chamberlain and Combs on the front row. Chamberlain held the lead for the first four circuits before Jason Montgomery moved to the point. Hometown favorite, Ron Perrine Jr., hit the backstretch wall on lap five and had to retire. Nine laps later, Aaron Scott, last year's winner, duplicated Perrine's wreck and he too was eliminated from the race. Jason Montgomery clearly had the field covered until his car got loose coming out of turn four. Montgomery slid sideways before collecting his car, but it was too late. Chamberlain streaked by at the flagstand and kept the lead for the final five laps. Montgomery held on to finish second.

The next feature of the evening was the Professional Computer Modifieds. Jon Henry and Mike Roediger led the talented field of twenty drivers to the green flag. Henry took the lead early and never looked back. It's a good thing he didn't because he would have seen a whale of a race between Todd Sherman, Terry Hull, and newcomer, Doug Adkins. The three drivers battled in every corner for the right to finish second to the dominant performance of Henry. Adkins finally secured second with the points leader, Terry Hull, finishing in third. In victory lane, a shaking Henry said, "Since I was eight years old, I've dreamed about winning at Limaland. This is incredible." Henry is the third different winner this year in the Modifieds and qualified for his first King of the Quarter-Mile.

The Bud Thunderstock feature was the Kevin Gossard show. Gossard, in his first trip to Limaland this year, took command of the race on the first lap. Everything was going Gossard's way until a lap eleven spin by Mike Kruger Jr. brought out the yellow and erased Gossard's commanding lead. On the restart, Gossard left Tony Anderson and Jeff Babcock to battle for second in what turned out to be an epic fight between two savvy veterans. Anderson and Babcock continuously traded slide-jobs. The best part of the action was the level of professionalism and respect the driver's showed for each other. In the end, Anderson squeezed out a second place finish and Babcock crossed the line in third.

Your next chance to be part of the celebration of 72 years of racing action is next week when Limaland Motorsports Park presents Four Banger Friday featuring the USAC Ford Focus Midgets. The Elwer Fence Sprints, Professional Computer Company UMP Modifieds and Bud Thunderstocks will also be on hand. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and racing on America's premier quarter-mile begins at 7:30 p.m.
