Herrick wins First Ever WISSOTA Late Model Feature, Eischens dedicates win to family

Gloomy skies and back to normal temperatures were found at the speedway on Evan’s Printing night. A light rain show helped with the track prep early in the afternoon but once racing action got underway another rain cloud moved in during the WISSOTA Late Model heat races slowing up the action as the crew rolled the track back in. The track was fast with a small cushion that the crew kept working on all night to keep minimal which produced some fast and exciting racing.

The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature was first on the track and the quick and tacky track lead to exciting racing with the class running their 18 lap feature without a caution flag waving. Harlan Morehart used the pole position to jump into the early lead with Andrew Wiste right behind him. With two laps completed Joel Alberts moved past Wiste to take over the second spot leaving him to race with Arnold for third. On the next lap Arnold took over the third spot while Kenny Wytaske moved under Wiste to duel for fourth. Behind them Greg Pfeifer Jr and Chris Adams raced for sixth. With twelve to go Wytaske moved into fourth while Arnold had moved past Alberts and was starting to work on Morehart for the lead. Closing in on the halfway point Arnold moved into the lead as he quickly started to work lapped traffic. With seven left Morehart had his hands full as Alberts, Wytaske and Wiste all ran in close formation swapping positions. Arnold cruised home with his second win of the season followed by Wytaske in second. Morehart, Alberts and Wiste rounded out the top five with each of their best finishes of the season.

A complete restart was needed for the WISSOTA Street Stock feature before the race could get underway as Fred Prudoehl’s mount broke on the front straight. Tony Horsman took the early lead on the restart with Nathan Finley and Steve Eischens battling it out for second. Scot Nelson and Karl Hewitt Jr. raced for fourth behind them. Three laps down and Horsman looked really strong up front with Eischens now in second. Five down and Eischens worked Horsman for the lead as Nelson and Finley raced for third. Eleven to go and Horsman continued to lead as the top four ran nose to tail. Three laps later Eischens finally moved into the lead with Horsman now trying to battle back by on the low side. A caution with seven to go as Finley spun around in turn two saw Nelson in the back of the pack. Hewitt moved into second behind Eischens as Horsman slowed into the infield, Tony Shaner into third as Nelson and Ryan Goergen raced for fourth. Three to go and Scott Olson, Shaner and Hewitt were three wide for position with Nelson watching intently. Hewitt moved back into second while Nelson followed him past the pack for third. Nelson took over second with two to go but Eischens was long gone before then. In victory lane an emotional Eischens dedicated the win to his long time racing partner Chuck Nerland and the whole Nerland family who lost their wife and mother Christine over the winter. A very emotional win on this mothers day weekend.

Ted Marrs dominated the US Army WISSOTA Super Stock feature from the drop of the green flag, Chris Klinger followed him into the second spot with Kevin Hager in third. Chris Groth was quickly in the top five until he spun in turn three bringing out the caution. Three laps later Groth again was inside the top five as he worked on Ryan Siegle for the fourth spot. Marrs was still riding around up front slowly pulling away from the field while Klinger rode around in second. The super stocks rode the cushion around the speedway as they flew around the 3/8 mile track. Siegle, Groth and Cole Queensland ran nose to tail for the last ten laps of the race until Siegle pushed up in four allowing both drivers to get by. Marrs took home his first feature race of the season at Deer Creek with Klinger and Hager rounding out the top three.

With a wicked fast track you knew there would be some torn up sheet metal for the Valley Featherlite WISSOTA Late Model feature, and although there were only a couple cautions there was definitely some crinkled metal. Doug Herrick started on the front row and he looked like he was shot out of a canon on the first laps as he jumped into a huge lead followed by Justin Sass and broth Nick Herrick in third. Kerry Hanson and Mark Teske who brought out the former Brad Waits late model which was the chassis Teske used last season were racing for fourth. With four laps completed Doug Herrick had pulled out to a full straight away lead. Neil Eckhart and Paul Novotny now were racing side by side for fifth. Nick Herrick took over the second position with fifteen to go as Doug was working through large packs of lapped cars. Two laps later Hanson moved around Sass for third as Eckhart, Keith Foss, Lance Matthees and Nate Wasmund were bunched up behind Sass in a great race. Unfortunately that great racing led to the first caution of the event negating Herricks half lap lead. On the restart D. Herricks bad luck continued as his front breaks locked up on the restart and was unable to continue. Nick upheld the family honors though as he took the lead on the restart. Foss, Matthees and Teske were three wide on the restart with Eckhart trying to chase down Herrick up front. The final caution waved with three to go. Herrick continued to lead on the restart while Foss, Matthees and Eckhart went three wide for second. At the line it was Herrick, Matthees be a small margin over Foss and Eckhart with Sass rounding out the top five.

The EZ-Fabricating USRA Modified feature was the last one of the night and as they exited turn two – four wide for the lead you knew it was going to be exciting. Tommy Myer took the lead with Brad Waits moving into second. Corey Dripps had a flat tire with two down bunching up the field. Myer led on the restart with Waits trying to work to his low side as another caution flew on the next lap. On the next restart Waits drove it hard into one and exiting turn two took the lead as Myer now had his hands full of Mark Noble. With seventeen to go the read end of Tim Donlinger’s car broke sending him crashing into turn one ending his night. Waits again led on the restart while Bob Timm and Mark Noble now battled hard swapping spots and lines in every corner racing for second. Timm eventually took the spot as Noble slid back behind Myer after pushing up in turn two. With ten to go Noble and Alan :Mondus were now racing for fourth with Mondus gaining control of the spot with seven to go. Waits pulled out to a full straightaway lead as he took home the win.
