Weedsport, NY – May 13, 2007 – By Gary M. Spaid, Cayuga County Fair Speedway PR
On Sunday Jimmy Phelps was finally able to bring his Andy Phelps Motorsports number 99J Troyer machine home in first following two straight second-place finishes at Cayuga County Fair Speedway.
“The car felt really comfortable tonight,” stated Phelps following his win. “One problem is when the race goes green the entire way, sometimes you forget where you’re at.” The race average speed was 76.658 mph as the entire 35-lap distance was covered in just over 10 minutes.
In the special Soccer Moms Karmageddon, six vans took to the high banks to run a five lap main event. The ladies made these vans really rock! Local resident Donna Haskell took the victory over Leslie Planck, wife of Big-Block Modified driver Dale Planck.
In DIRTcar Sportsman action it was Joe Williams claiming the 25-lap main event. Once under way the final 20 laps were run caution-free. In Full fender UMP/DIRTcar Street Stock action, fans may have seen one of the best features ever run at the speedway by these cars. Three and even four car wide action was common during the 15-lap race. In the end Phil Marsden came away with the victory.
The final class on the track was the newly named BattleKarz (formerly known as the enduro class). They too ran a flawless race with Karl Werner winning. With all of the features running basically caution free the night’s races ended at 9:15 p.m.
The 35-lap DIRTcar Modified feature opened with Chad Homan taking the early lead until Tom Juhl passed him on lap two using the high line through the fourth turn. Juhl then began to stretch his advantage over Homan, Billy Dunn and Steve Hulsizer. A bit further back it was Butch Tittle holding off Justin Haers, Steve Paine and a charging Jimmy Phelps. Phelps then began the process of working his way to the front, slipping by Haers for fifth on lap 16.
On lap 24, Phelps raced around Homan to take second and then closed the gap every lap on leader Juhl. With just five laps remaining in the race, Phelps ducked low on the backstretch and took the lead. He then pulled away from Juhl and at the finish line it was Paine, Homan and Hulsizer rounding out the top-five.
In DIRTcar Sportsman action the yellow flag flew on the first lap when Todd Town slowed on the front stretch with a broken shock. Out front was youngster Anthony Steiner in his lucky number 13 car. The second yellow of the race came just two laps later when Shawn Donath suffered a flat tire and slowed down the front straight.
The final yellow came on the restart when Tim Currier and Bill Coleman came together in the second turn. Both were able to leave the scene of the accident, however Kevin Ridley slammed into the Coleman car. Ridley was sent to the pits and race resumed.
Steiner saw his lead evaporate as Joe Williams slowly closed the gap built up. On lap 14, Williams made his move using the high side of the front cute to complete his pass for the lead.
A real battle was developing behind the two leaders for third through seventh, as these cars raced “under a blanket.” Lap after lap one car would use a line and maneuver by the rest to grab third, only to see the other three charge harder the next lap and shuffle the third place car back to fifth.
Up front Williams went on to win by nearly a full five seconds. Steiner held on to second, his best career finish to date at Cayuga County. Jeremy Pitcher, Alan Fink and Tim Currier rounded out the top-five finishers.
‘Some of these guys were a little scary to race with tonight,” commented Williams. “But I have to say Anthony gave me all the room I needed. He raced me clean.” He then added,” My car worked well up top even through we have a bent rear clip now.”
In the 15-lap Street Stock feature Dan Hoffman Sr. led all but the final two laps of the race. Hoffman was able to out-distance the rest of the pack, but just by a few feet. Right behind him was one whale of a race involving Nick Rizzo, Phil Marsden and Nathan Peckham. Marsden was able to take second on lap seven and start working on passing Hoffman for the lead. His opportunity came on lap 14 and one circuit later Marsden went on to claim the win. As he coasted into victory lane his left front tire went flat.
“All of a sudden this car started working real well,” commented Marsden. “I didn’t feel the tire going down until I slowed up some.” Rounding out the top-five were Mike Welch, who passed Hoffman on the last lap, Hoffman, Rizzo and Dave Marcuccilli.
The front of the BattleKarz finish looked like a Werner clan meeting except for Barb Amidon, who came home in the money in third. The final decision was made on how the Battle Karz points would be kept in 2007. It was decided to award 10-9-8-7-6 to the top five finishers and then everyone else present would get 5 points for racing.
