St. Catharines, ONT…The 2007 edition of the BRP CanAm Late Model Series is headed for Canada. Specifically, the race teams are headed for Merrittville Speedway in Thorold, Ontario just outside of St. Catharines on Monday May 21st for the second event in the 19 event Series.
Queen Elizabeth has an invitation from Erica Bicknell, General Manager of Merrittville Speedway, to join the festivities as the Speedway joins all of Canada in celebrating Queen Victoria Holiday. The Queen probably will not make the trip from Buckingham Palace since she has recently traveled to / from the USA where she attended the Kentucky Derby. She will be sorry!
Miss Bicknell has also extended invitations to over 50 BRP CanAm Series race teams to race at Merrittville for what will be the sixth BRP CanAm Series event ever at the famous old and beautifully revitalized Bicknell / Williamson owned Speedway. Most of those invited plan to attend.
Heading the list of early entries are Larry Knowles and Jon Rivers. Knowles won the Series opener at Black Rock Speedway earlier this month and hopes to ride that momentum for back –to – back wins on the very competitive Series. Jon Rivers won the 2006 Series event at Merrittville and would like nothing better than a repeat win at the very racey Speedway.
Randy Hall, defending BRP CanAm Champion, will make the trip across the Peace Bridge hoping to win his first ever race in Canada. Merrittville favorites include the Miller family from Wellsville, NY. Andy Miller [now living and racing in Tennessee] won the open race at Merrittville in 2004. Andy’s brother, Bruce, and father, Dave, each won in 2005. Bruce and Dave finished second and third [behind Rivers] in the solo 2006 event.
Monday’s Queen Victoria Day Special marks the sixth time that the BRP CanAm Late Models have raced at Merrittville Speedway. Darren Kish won a special invitational event on Queens Day in 2004 and a love affair was created. “Our race fans really love the late models. The return of the BRP CanAm Series is one of the most anticipated events on our 2007 schedule. Actually, the Series will be here twice in 2007; next week [May 21] and again on Saturday August 18. We have a great Holiday Weekend schedule and hope that all of BRP CanAm Series fans from the States will join us for a little Monday Night Madness,” says Erica.
In addition to the prize money posted by the Speedway the BRP CanAm drivers will be racing for F/A Products – Clevite Engine Parts heat race awards, the Ed Carley Motorsports B-Main awards, DART Machinery Hard Charger Award, Performance Friction Brake of the Race Award and a portion of the $30,000 year end point fund.
New for 2007 is the Close Racing Supply Front Row Challenge. The pole position starter, from the redraw, will have the option of starting the race from 26th and collecting a $500 bonus from Close Racing Supply if he / she wins. If the pole position starter declines the offer the option will go to the outside from row starter.
Join us on the north side of the Peace Bridge on Monday at Merrittville Speedway.
Passports are NOT required until 2008
