Pittsburgh ’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway has announced a schedule change with a new format, date, and name for the Penn National Classic. With an increased purse and increased distance, the open competition special event for Late Models has been named in memory of Red Miley and moved to Sunday July 1, 2007.
The racing community continues to mourn the passing of Miley Motorsports President James “Red” Miley. Born in 1953, Miley had been a race fan, car owner, and speedway promoter for many years, before losing his courageous battle with cancer at age 53, in May. In his honor, Pittsburgh ’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway will present the “Red Miley Memorial,” on Sunday July 1, featuring a 53-lap Late Model event paying $5,300 to win. All other PPMS divisions will also be in competition, plus a FIREWORKS display and a Demolition Derby for 4-Cylinder cars.
In preparation for this big event, PPMS will NOT race on Saturday June 30. Rain date for the “Red Miley Memorial” will be Sunday July 15.
The unsanctioned Late Model event will offer 32 starting spots for the A-feature, which will utilize the “Delaware Style” restart procedure. During each caution period in the 53-lap main event, four “lucky dog” lapped cars will get to restart at the rear of the field on the lead lap. This schedule change will eliminate the Penn National 40, which was originally announced for Saturday July 14. A regular purse “Action Event” will take place as usual on July 14.
