Batavia, NY—May 19, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
Steve Schumacher was on his game tonight as he picked up his first career sportsman feature win at Genesee Speedway. Jim Johnson and Pete Stefanski continued their dominance by completing the three-peat.
Steve Schumacher was the class of the field in the Troyer Race Cars Sportsman division as he took the lead on lap 11 of the feature event from Ricky Newton Jr. that ran from green to checkers. Newton Jr. would come home in a season best second place behind the ultra fast Schumacher. Rob Pratt who started 10th charged his way to 6th behind R.J. Kingdollar but couldn’t find a way around him to for the 5th spot. Last weeks race winner John Venuto was the hard charger of the race as he was able to work his way up to 8th after starting from the 14th hole. Stubby Pangrazio, John Panattoni and Greg Mrzywka would round out the top five behind Schumacher and Newton Jr.
The BDK Construction 360 Late Models have a couple of streaks on the go. Defending class champion Jim Johnson scored his 3rd straight victory on the season as Dave DuBois scored his 3rd consecutive 2nd place behind Johnson. DuBois jumped to an early lead as he out powered Derek Boyle off turn 2 on the initial start. Johnson would follow DuBois on the high side to overtake Boyle for the runner-up position. Yellow would fly for a big pile up in turn 2 involving Bill Holmes, Jeff Bridge, Brian Kotarski, Ron Mogavero, Carl Shetler, JJ Mazur and Tom Baker. Mazur was missing portions of his prom to be at the races and retired his ride early after the wreck in turn 2. On lap 6 Johnson would take the point from DuBois. The speedway would fall yellow for a spin on lap 8 and lap 12, then run green for the rest of the distance. In the final 7 laps Babbitt and Pangrazio were the only two to swap spots and Johnson came home victorious again, followed by Dubois, Don Newton, Bob Babbit and Josh Pangrazio.
The Greenlief’s Restaurant Pro Stocks was once again dominated by Pete Stefanski as he led the event from wire to wire. Eric Greenlief and Mike Martin had the best battle on the track as they fought for the 5th position for 3 laps before Greenlief would finally take the position. Steve Lewis and Don Barnes would battle for position late in the race with Barnes coming out on top. Stefanski would cruise to win number 3 on the season followed by Barnes, Lewis, Gagner and Greenlief.
The Bobcat of Buffalo Street Stocks seen Bill Weller make his return to victory lane by holding off rookie Jeb Walworth for the win. Weller jumped to the early lead with Colton Chappius and David Downs chasing him down. Chappius and Downs were so involved with there battle that they didn’t notice Walworth was making a charge and over took both of them going into turn 1 on lap 5. Downs and Chappius would come together in turn 4 sending Downs around and bringing out the yellow. The official call was to send Chappius to the back for rough driving. Chappius did not like what he was hearing over the one way radio and stopped and unbuckled from his car at the flag stand to dispute the call. By doing this Chappius bought himself an instant disqualification and found himself done for the night. Walworth was able to get to the bumper of Weller, but with Weller running the preferred line Walworth would have to settle for the runner up stop. Joey Spicola, David Downs and Kenny Benouche would round out the top 5.
Nick Skeet would return to victory lane by leading the final five circuits defeating Ken Hixenbaugh in the Dickinson’s Auto Service Mini Stock Division. Dan Norton took the early lead but relinquish the position when he spun in turn 4 on lap 7 giving the lead to Hixenbaugh. Jason Hull and Russ Wassner would battle for the 3rd spot as Hixenbaugh and Skeet would check out on the field. Hull would hold the position from Wassner and for the final 3 laps. Nick Skeet and Hixenbaugh would have a side by side battle for the top spot with Skeet beating Hixenbaugh to the line to collect his 2nd feature win of the year.
The Ladies race displayed an exciting 8 laps, as the ladies took to the track in the mini stocks. Samantha Burch jumped to the early lead from her 3rd starting position with Monica Wassner making chase. Wassner and Danyell Selapack would swap the position for 2 laps with Wassner coming out on top. Burch would spin in turn 4 and have the car up on two wheels before coming to rest. She left the track and replaced the flat right rear and returned to action. Selepack would come out of nowhere to claim the checkers followed by Wassner, Debbie Maier and Samantha Burch.
