TRACK TIME VALUABLE TOWARDS ELDORA LATE MODEL SUCCESS
ROSSBURG, OH (May 19) -- Ask most any Late Model driver what the key element is towards victory in Eldora Speedway major events and you’ll get a resounding response - “track time”.
Eldora’s first major event of the young season, the 13th annual Dirt Late Model Dream, is just around the corner (June 8 & 9), and with the crazy Spring weather suffered throughout the Midwest, there have been no opportunities to gain that much needed track time.
The only remaining chance will be Sunday, May 27, when the Sunoco American Late Model Series (ALMS) joins the NRA (National Racing Alliance) Sprint Invaders and Advance Auto Parts Stock Cars in a big Memorial Weekend tripleheader.
Tradition has shown this to be a ‘must race’ for teams wanted to fair well in the Dream, which offers a whopping $100,000 paycheck to the 100-lap victor.
And, with no pre-entry requirements for the ALMS race, it only adds to the excitement with lots of drama and expectations of just who might show up to do battle on the massive one-half mile clay oval. The paycheck that night is $2,000 for the 25-lap chase, but that is minor in comparison to the lessons to be learned.
This year will be a whole new ballgame for the competitors. Out the books go all previous chassis set-up notes. Over the winter months, hundreds of loads of clay were put down and the oval reshaped. While that had taken some weeks in the early-going for the track crews to overcome the wet Spring, the past few weeks have produced multi-grooved competition.
The road to the Dirt Late Model Dream will begin this Sunday, and for the teams not able to make it to Eldora due to previous commitments, they will be flooding the phone lines seeking information from those that did attend.
Scott Bloomquist is the defending champion of the Dirt Late Model Dream and is expected to be on hand to defend his title. The two-day format will find the time trial runs on Friday (June 8), followed by Saturday’s (June 9) elimination heat races, C-Main, B-Main and the 100-lap Dream. Entry and ticket information may be found on the track’s website www.eldoraspeedway.com
