Reed, Ivy share Fremont victories, Shammo wins 3rd in 305 sprints

FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, May 19, 2007) - Fremont's John Ivy broke out a
different car for this weekends's racing - a tribute car to long-time crew
member and friend Lin Potter who passed away recently - and it propelled him
to the Engine Pro Victory Lane at Fremont Speedway Saturday on Roots Poultry
Night in the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprints.
Ivy might have made it two wins on the evening had it not been for Byron
Reed getting by him late to take the win during the make-up feature event
from the April 28 rainout on Kistler Engines Night.
Millbury's Andy Shammo planned for a late race charge in the Fremont Federal
Credit Union 305 Sprint's feature and it paid off as he grabbed the lead
with one lap remaining to score his third win of the season.
Tiffin's Brian Arnold led wire to wire in the 20-lap feature for the Fremont
Fence Dirt Trucks to score his 8th career victory at "The Track That Action
Built." It wasn't easy for the defending dirt truck track champion, as
three-time Fremont track champion Steve Sabo hounded him most of the way.
"Lin was a true racer....he kept coming to the shop and to the track while
he was battling his illness...right to the very end. I know he was looking
down on us," said an emotional Ivy on his 25th career Fremont victory. "This
one is for Andy (Potter, Ivy's crew chief) and his family."
"Ricky (Stenhouse) made this car look good (he won in the same car last year
at Fremont during Ohio Sprint Speedweek) and I couldn't let the team down,"
said Ivy. "We put a harder tire on and it really locked the car down the
last half of the race...that was the difference. I have to thank Dee Genzman
for believing in me and putting this deal together for us."
Reed, the 2003 Fremont champion, also paid tribute to Lin Potter after his
11th career Fremont victory.
"It was great to race hard with John (Ivy). I want to say how much I admired
Lin Potter...he was a true racer, and Andy is one of the best wrenches out
there," said Reed in the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his Reebar
Diecasting sponored #5. "I also have to thank my mom. My dad had major
surgery and is at home recouperating and Mom was my crew at the shop this
morning."
Shammo's three wins at Fremont have not come easy, as the driver of the
Village Inn/KS Sales & Service #48 has had to work his way up through the
pack. Saturday was no different, as he started 9th, and battled with Kevin
Lee and Rich Farmer the last 15 laps before grabbing the top spot as the
white flag flew.
"That was one of those deals where it's better to be in second when you get
into lapped traffic. We're doing some things different as far as set-up with
shocks and it seems to be working. I'm just going to enjoy this because I've
been around long enough to know your luck can change over night," said
Shammo beside his Lamar and Yvonne Burkin owned #48.
Brian Arnold's 8th career Fremont win almost didn't come to be as the third
row starter made contact with Art Ball in the first turn of the start.
"I got into Art...I want to apologize to them...that wasn't intentional. I
wasn't coming off the bottom for anything. If they were going to beat me
they were going to have to drive around me," said Arnold beside his Burns
Electric, Crown Battery sponsored dirt truck. "I almost screwed up on the
last turn...got in too hard and nearly gave Steve (Sabo) the door around. I
have to give him credit...he could have taken me out, but he raced me
clean."
In the make-up 410 sprint feature, pole-sitter Jamie Miller grabbed the
early lead, with Ivy and Troy Vacarro in tow. Ivy would grab the lead on lap
four with a high move exiting turn 2, with Miller, and third starting Reed
following. The action for the lead would heat up on lap 12 as Ivy and Reed
raced side by side, while Miller and Caleb Griffith trailed.
The action would come to a halt on lap 17 for a flipping Rodney Morgan (he
was uninjured), with the running order Ivy, Reed, Griffith, Miller and Todd
Heller.
With no traffic ahead of him, Ivy took a three car length lead. But, when he
got to back markers on lap 24, Reed began to close rapidly and the two raced
side by side again - nearly touching wheels several times. Reed would slide
under Ivy on lap 28 and would go onto score the victory. Ivy, Griffith,
Heller and Mike Linder would round out the top five.
In the Roots Poultry A-main for the 410 sprints, rookie Chris Andrews would
grab the early lead and would hold the top spot until Todd Heller sped
around the high side to take the point on the fifth lap. Heller would
continue to lead with Andrews, Miller, Reed and Griffith racing hard right
on his rear bumper.At the half-way mark of the 30-lap feature, Heller lead,
but 7th starter Ivy began to charge forward, running second, with Andrews,
Reed and Griffith in tow.
Ivy would take the top spot on lap 19, while Heller and Griffith battled
hard for second. Ivy would go on to score the win, as Heller nipped Griffith
at the checkered. Reed and Andrews would round out the top five.
In the 305 sprint feature, Rich Farmer would lead the first 14 laps as first
Mark Pridemore and then Kevin Lee would put on the pressure. Meanwhile Shamo
would steadily march through the pack, moving into third by lap 10. Lee
would use a lapped machine to pin Farmer to the bottom and grab the lead on
lap 15, only to see Farmer fight back and regaining the top spot a lap
later.
Farmer would lead until lap 20 when again he got hung up on a lapped
machine, allowing Lee to jump around for the top spot. Shammo would move
around Farmer with three laps remaining and set his sights on Lee. On lap
23, Lee and Shammo raced side by side for the lead, with Shammo holding the
slight advantage as they crossed the start-finish line with the white flag
waving. Shammo would pull away for the win over Lee, Farmer, 10th-starter
Bryon Sebetto and Matt Merrill rounding out the top five.
The dirt truck feature was another barn-burner, with Arnold grabbing the
lead at the drop of the green with Dwight Waltermeier and Steve Sabo in tow.
While Arnold stayed glued to the bottom groove, Sabo was able to get under
Waltermeier for second on lap 4. Cory Ward would move into thired a lap
later and Arnold, Sabo and Ward would run nose to tail until lap 13 when
veteran Art Ball would utilize the middle groove to move into thired and
challenge Sabo for second.
That remained the running order the final seven circuits, as Arnold took the
checkered over Sabo, Ball, Ward and Waltermeier.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, May 26 as Crown Battery
and KOT Trucking Night features a 50-lap feature for the Fort Ball Pizza
Palace 410 Sprints paying $5,000 to win! The Fremont Federal Credit Union
305 Sprints and Fremont Fence Dirt Trucks are also in action.
