Stewart, Ruhlman & Babcock at Eldora.
ROSSBURG, OH (May 19) -- “Unbelievable, this car just went anywhere I put it”, shouted Shane Stewart following Saturday night’s convincing All Star Sprint feature win and Eldora Speedway. “And wow, here I am on the stage at Eldora, my dream has come true.” Joining Stewart with victories on the tripleheader program were Brian Ruhlman in the UMP (United Midwestern Promoters) Modifieds and Jeff Babcock in the Advance Auto Parts Stock Cars.
Asked about the track conditions, Stewart said “the track is back, this IS Eldora, you could run anywhere you wanted to tonight. I just put the pedal down, looked straight and went fast.” He made the win look easy with a superb chassis set-up. Never once did he flinch, not even in lapped traffic as he sliced through it.
A few minor skirmishes slowed the pace three times, but not once did it slow down Stewart. A pole starting position worked to his full advantage; having led from the start to the finish.
It was the lapped traffic that gave dash winner Rob Chaney some hope. Chaney is a specialist in lapped traffic at Eldora, but Saturday, Stewart was one up on him. When questioned about that in victory lane Stewart responded, “at Eldora, there is only way to win and that is go fast and don’t lift. I’ve learned through the years, that if back off an inch at this place, you lose a mile.”
Chaney responded, “we were fast tonight, just not fast enough. Yes, I’m pleased with the run and glad to see Shane run so well. We’ll take this finish and move on.”
Veteran Danny Smith turned in one of his strongest Eldora finishes in recent years with a sold third place run, while defending All Star champion Greg Wilson came from the middle of the field to finish fourth, with Brock Mays crossing the line fifth.
Davey Gantt finally shook off the gremlins that had been stalling his Modified efforts to date and led the early stages of that finale. However, an early race restart found Brian Ruhlman charging just a little too hard going into turn one, with contact between the two. That resulted in a spin by Gantt. thus ending his night’s efforts.
From that point forward it was clear sailing for Ruhlman, while last week’s feature winner Jerry Bowersock tried inching Ruhlman in, but to no avail. Mike Roediger found off Bill Lewis for third, with Mark Kowarsch coming from far back in the line-up to finish fifth.
Perhaps the most competitive event of the night came with the Advance Auto Parts Stock Cars, as Jeff Babcock was able to hold off a strong field of challengers. Never able to build a huge lead, Babcock was just strong enough to use the clean track ahead to his advantage. Behind him the battle brewed.
Gossard has his hands full holding back a host of victory hopefuls, but was able to hang on to the finish with his runner-up spot, while Tony Anderson, Barney Craig and Mike Dirkson completed the top five.
