CLEARFIELD, PA - Three drivers picked up first ever wins at the New
Gamblers Raceway Park on
Friday night, including Don Hildebrant of Nazareth in the Small Block
Modifieds, Justin Queen of
Irvona in the pure stocks and Kirby Tucker of Loretto in the four
cylinder wild cards.
Repeat winner included “Hot Rod” Rodney Phillips of Punxsutawney
in the late models and
Dan Smeal of Houtzdale in the street stocks.
The late model feature started with Cody Schultz and Harry Miller on
the front row with
Schultz taking the lead and setting the pace. Schultz was holding off
all challenges from new
comer Bernie Whiteford but on lap 18 working off the fourth corner
Schultz said an axel snapped,
causing him to spin and park the car for the night.
This gave the lead to Whiteford who only led a short time before
Rodney Phillips moved
into the lead with less than five laps to go. Phillips was able to hold
off late race challenges
from Billy Eash and Levi Ardery for his second win of the season. The
top five were: Phillips,
Eash, Ardery, Chris Knuth and Butch Braim. Heat wins went to Harry
Miller and Billy Eash.
The modifieds were a little on the short side this week with five cars
making the call.
Don Hildebrant started on the pole and led from flag-to-flag, but his
win wasn’t easy, as Mark
Frankhouser was hounding him the entire race. Frankhouser went under
the #17e several times but it
was Hildebrant who took the win at the line. The top five were
Hildebrant, Frankhouser, Justin
Bowser, Kelly Schrekengost and Marvin Williams. Marvin Williams won the
heat.
Jamie Price and Nathan Russell led the street stock main to the green
flag with Price
taking the lead after the pair ran door-to-door the first lap. A
caution at the line slowed the
event. On the restart it was still Price in the lead with Russell in
second and Dan Smeal in
third. Smeal took second away from Russell then the lead from Price by
the fourth lap. Smeal then
held off Russell’s challenges the rest of the way to get his second
win of the season. Russell was
second with Ray Billott third, Price fourth and Jason Peters fifth. The
heats were won by Nathan
Russell and Dan Smeal.
The pure stock feature saw Richard Hubler and Justin Queen on the
front row with Queen
taking the lead and setting the pace. As the race continued Tony Hugill
was in second and Gary
Little moved into third to battle for the lead. As the race neared
it’s conclusion Hugill spun out
giving second to Little.
Queen was still leading as Little moved into second and tried the low
side of the track to
pass Queen, but Queen was working the outside to perfection and Little
could not get off the turn
like he wanted. With three laps to go, Hubler blew the engine and Queen
hit the oil, allowing
Little to get past for the lead before the field took the caution.
On the restart Little held off the challenges from Queen and third
place runner Jason Bainey, and
at the line it was Little over Queen, Bainey, Hugill and BJ Hudson.
Little was disqualified for
competing in the pure stock division while a regular in the street
stock class, thus giving the
win the Queen. This moved everyone up one spot and gave fifth to John
Eckenron. Heat wins were
split between Justin Queen and Jason Bainey.
Kirby Tucker and Aaron Luzier led the wild card feature to the green
flag with Tucker
taking the lead and setting a torrid pace. As he led Kevin Clark was
going to the front from his
sixth place starting position. Clark moved into second and tried to get
around the #53 of Tucker
but the new comer wasn’t about to be denied his first career win.
Clark was second with Kirk Hess,
Luzier and Darren Lucas completing the top five. Heat wins went to Ben
Smith and Kevin Clark.
