BECHTELSVILLE, PA MAY 19, 2007 . . Six time track champion Craig VonDohren of Oley, PA drove the Flurer Machine Shop/Stauffer Construction No. 1c to victory on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway in the 30-lap Auto Locator Magazine NASCAR Whelen All American Series Modified feature race. In the companion 20-lapper for the Late Models Randy Stoudt of Pottstown was able to bring the TP Trailers/Rogers Auto Parts/Paradise Road Slot Track No. 10 home first in the Auto Locator Magazine sponsored event.
“We had a handful,” said VonDohren in victory lane. “We kept killing our self on the bottom. We lucked out tonight.”
With drizzling rain keeping the track in super fast condition Bobby Gunther Walsh was able to put his Enter Net One sponsored entry in front of the 29-car starting field for the first lap. On the second circuit Mike Gular charged to the front with the T.H.Properties No. 53.
At 10-laps Gular was still in charge with Craig VonDohren putting pressure on him running the low groove. Danny Erb was third.
Just a few laps earlier Walsh and Jeff Strunk made contact with Walsh losing a wheel in the second turn and was done for the night. Strunk also had enough damage on his mount to take it to the pits done for the night.
At the midway mark young Gular continued to hold off VonDohren with Rick Schaffer now running third.
It was not until the 26th circuit of the one-third-mile banked clay oval that VonDohren was able to take command with Rick Schaffer moving to second.
At the finish VonDohren, winner of 56 features at the Berks County oval, was just a few car lengths in front of second place Rick Schaffer (Woxall) followed by Danny Erb (Boyertown), Mike Gular (East Greenville) and Doug Manmiller (Shoemakersville).
Duane Howard was able to come from 22nd starting spot to finish sixth.
Wayne Pfeil put his mount in front of the pack getting in front of polesitter John Giesler before the end of the first lap in the 20-lap Late Model feature race. Defending champion Chuck Schutz had something break on the front of his Maverick’s Motorcycle Club No. 1 and headed for the pits done for the night.
At the five lap marker Pfeil made contact with the wall in turn two but was able to continue but John Giesler was back in front of the 24 car starting field. At 10 laps it was Giesler, Brian Shuey and Randy Stoudt but just one lap later Stoudt had made a bold move and took control of the race.
Stoudt lead the rest of the way with Ron Kline (Green Lane), coming from 21st starting spot, coming on in the late laps to challenge but falling short and settling for second. Third spot went to Brian Shuey (Shoemakersville) followed by Mike Kellner (Lansdale) and Kyle Merkel (Gilbertsville).
Qualifying heat races for the Modifieds were won by Bobby Gunther Walsh, Mike Gular, Shawn Reimert and Doug Manmiller while consolation wins were earned by Duane Howard and Jon Kellner Jr. The Late Model qualifiers were won by Chuck Schutz, Brian Shuey and Mark Malcolm. The qualifying heats for the Late Models were run on May 12th before rain washed out the balance of the racing program.
The Cornerstone Auto Sales of Fleetwood, PA Hard Charger Awards went to Ron Kline in the Late Models for coming from 21st starting spot to finish second while Meme DeSantis earned the Hard Charger award in the Modified feature coming from 29th to finish 10th.
